My clients have brought me a wide variety of interesting work. Some of their legal matters have been quite minor and I can usually handle them in a matter of hours for a flat fee, whereas some complex business litigation can take months or even years and will require a retainer. That being said, a case is rarely too big or too small for me. Instead of focusing on the size or potential payout of a case, what I focus on is taking only the cases where I know I will provide exceptional service to my client.
While there is no "typical" business law client, there are a few situations that I do see regularly. For instance, some clients come in just needing to have a document reviewed or to get a legal analysis of a contract. Others need help in planning a business and protecting themselves from liabilities. Others have been defrauded and need immediate legal assistance and litigation. Clients have been satisfied with my results in these matters and many more.
While business law is my specialty, I handle several other legal matters routinely. These include basic trust and estate planning, criminal expungements, unlawful detainer hearings, and Chapter 7 consumer bankruptcies.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?
As an entrepreneur and consumer advocate, I particularly enjoy helping others navigate through the complicated legal landscape and achieve their business goals.
What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others
I am distinguishable from other lawyers in that I am a successful entrepreneur, specialized in business law while in law school, speak Japanese proficiently, and have experience mediating business disputes
Before attending law school, I co-founded a high-tech electronic test equipment company. We focused on import/export of security-sensitive equipment between universities, researchers, and certain government entities.
This lead to my emphasis on business law while in law school. Not only did I take many courses centered on the many facets of domestic and international business law, I also studied international business law in Japan.
While in Japan I was able to further hone my Japanese, which I received a BA in from UCSB. My Japanese language skills have provided me many opportunities to understand and appreciate Japanese culture and to take particular care to formality when working with Japanese clients.
These experiences have provided me with a unique and youthful insight into resolving various legal issues for businesses around the globe.
What distinguishes your law firm from others?
As a solo practitioner, Toeppen Law allows me to choose the cases I take. Every case I take is hand-picked by me. My main criteria is that I can do an outstanding job on the case. Other firms will go into an extensive cost/benefit analysis that short shifts many clients in my honest opinion.
Another big difference between Toeppen Law and other firms is that I am an actual person you can talk to at most times of the day. Many other lawyers are hyper-inaccessible, using their secretaries as the first line of defense against actually talking to their clients. I welcome your input and want to make sure your expectations and understandings fit the situation at hand.
Grant Toeppen
After graduating UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Japanese, I set about founding an international import/export company. I co-founded this company in 2005 and traded high tech, security-sensitive equipment with over 35 countries. Running this sort of business required strict compliance with import/export laws and regulations, as well as a lot of marketplace savvy and the occasional stroke of luck.
After being on the losing side of some insurance indemnification agreements, I decided to attend law school to help myself and other businesses use the law to protect our livelihoods.
I attended McGeorge School of Law in Sacramanto, CA. While there I interned at Disability Rights CA. Later I helped do some research and litigation at Leadco, an international commercial law firm in Hanoi, Vietnam. Finally, I studied a large amount of international business law while attending Temple University, Tokyo Campus, as a guest student.
After passing the CA and NY Bar exams, I started a law practice in June 2012. Since then, I have assisted dozens of clients achieve their business planning goals. It has been a good ride, and I look forward to continuing to help clients long into the future.

McGeorge offered me a great opportunity to hone my advocacy skills and study international law. During my first semester at McGeorge, I reached the finals in the oral argument section of the school's moot court competition.
I continued my study of international law while working at a international commercial law firm in Hanoi, Vietnam.
My final semester of law school was spent studying international business law at Temple University in Tokyo, Japan.
