How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Many lawyers practice their entire careers with little or no interaction with clients or a sense of how their work impacts others. I knew if I went into consumer bankruptcy I would have direct interaction with my clients, and positively impact their lives. Most lawyers don't get to experience the joy of telling a family that's been suffering under crushing debt that the debt has been successfully discharged. It's a great feeling.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients should be fully educated so they understand each step of the process as they go through it.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am always willing to review documents prepared by clients.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I would strongly discourage clients from representing themselves. Over the years, I've seen well-intentioned people get in over their heads, seek out our help, and wind up as clients. That said, I am always happy to advise clients on how to achieve success.

Thomas McAvity

I opened and managed the Oregon and Washington Bankruptcy Law Offices for Macey & Aleman, the largest consumer bankruptcy firm in the country. While I greatly enjoyed opening offices and meeting with bankruptcy clients from Seattle to Eugene, I found that managing a team of attorneys was about as fulfilling as herding cats.

Being a father. Understanding the responsibilities and demands placed on the head of a household makes me a better lawyer. When a family's stability is threatened by medical emergency or other economic pressures - I have true empathy and do whatever I can to help.

Stylistically, I am easy to work with. I've heard clients say my three greatest strengths are compassion, candor and honesty - qualities they weren't expecting to find in a lawyer. On a humbler note, I think one of my greatest strengths is the ability to put myself in my client's shoes.

Personal interests:

The truth is, I get a lot of satisfaction from work. Aside from that, I'm most interested in my family, our golden retriever, Mayzie and following the NBA as closely as I can.
