Firm Overview

Thomas McCormack brings to his clients a thorough, practical knowledge of how family law and the courts work.
McCormack Family Law helps people from the beginning of marriage to the end. The goal is to prevent or resolve issues using strategies that cause the least conflict and cost. Currently, I generally limit my services to matters where child custody (parenting rights and responsibilities)issues are significant, either before or after a divorce or juvenile court custody determination. I have an enduring interest in protecting the interests of children, from infants to juveniles, whether their parents are married, divorced or single, in such matters as: paternity, child support, child custody and parenting time, special needs children, family member companionship rights. When there are domestic violence issues, I pursue civil or temporary protection orders for clients and their children.
In addition, I selectively handle matters regarding the allocation of pension benefits. I bring many years' specialized experience advising major Ohio multi-employer/union pension and benefit plans to my domestic relations practice, including work in pension valuation, pension benefits division, and qualified domestic relations orders (QDROs) as well as knowledge about divorce and public pensions, and divorce and military pensions.

My practice primarily serves people in Cuyahoga, Summit, Lake, Geauga, Portage and Trumbull counties. An initial free consultation is full and informative.

I am a steadfast advocate for people who want to understand and have their say in the legal process, and who expect:
--a knowledgeable, forthright advisor to clarify what their interests are in the framework of the law;
--a commitment to to solving problems without resorting to drawn-out and expensive legal proceedings;
--a responsive legal representative who is timely about returning phone calls and emails;
--discretion and creative alternative dispute resolution that enable you to emerge from the often difficult legal process with dignity and privacy intact;

During more than seven years as a trial magistrate hearing thousands of matters related to child custody and support, spousal support, property division, and divorce, I created unique courtroom procedures for litigant participation that made the legal process more transparent and led to more positive and lasting settlements; worked out many practical parenting plans, especially for special needs children; helped design and implement cutting-edge parenting programs aimed to preserve families; developed a sophisticated understanding of systems of control over and forms of violence against women; and successfully resolved complex property division and tax issues.
