Firm Overview

Debt problems can make your life very difficult. The stress of financial problems can strain you and your relationships. Many Ohioans have found bankruptcy to be a way out of crushing debt. Bankruptcy can lead you out of your debt problems and help give you a fresh start and new outlook.

We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code. Bankruptcy is a process in which consumers and businesses can eliminate or repay some or all of their debts under the protection of the federal bankruptcy court. For the most part, bankruptcies can be divided into liquidation and reorganization.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy comes under the liquidation category. It's called liquidation because the bankruptcy trustee may take and sell ("liquidate") some of your property to pay back some of your debt. However, you may keep property that is protected (also called "exempt") under Ohio state law.

There are several types of reorganization bankruptcies, but Chapter 13 is the most common type for consumers. In Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you keep all of your property, but must make monthly payments over three to five years to repay all or some of your debt.

Both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy have many rules and exceptions to those rules. The rules govern how debts are covered, who can file, and what property you can and cannot keep.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

In this day and age, times are tough, and the economy is down. No one is immune from financial hardship. Loss of a job, medical expenses, divorce, a business failure, or just unexpected life events can have devastating financial consequences.

At The Law Office of John M. Williams, LLC, we understand that bad things happen to good people. That is why we are here to help you solve your debt problems.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

It is very important that a bankruptcy case be filed and handled correctly. The rules are very technical, and a misstep may affect a debtor's rights. For example, a debtor whose case is dismissed for failure to file a required document, such as a credit counseling certificate, may lose the right to file another case or lose protections in a later case, including the benefit of the automatic stay. Bankruptcy has long-term financial and legal consequences - hiring a competent attorney, such as The Law Office of John M. Williams, LLC, is strongly recommended.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

We have an experienced legal staff who take the time to explain the bankruptcy process and help you regain financial control of your life, and more importantly, peace of mind.

Too often, bankruptcy is viewed negatively by our society. But for those who fear the stigma associated with bankruptcy, continually rising debt, and even foreclosure are often the consequence.

We advise clients that bankruptcy can be a fresh start. We work to help you get the debt relief you need, address consumer protection claims and avoid the negative outcomes.
