Steven M. Goldberg has been fighting for the rights of clients in Ohio and nationwide since 1989. We are there when, for many, all hope is gone. Steven has successfully represented claimants in both State and Federal Courts. He has helped obtain several multi-million dollar results in a wide variety of matters. After decades of trial work, Steven continues to receive referrals from clients whom he represented decades ago as well as from lawyers, locally and beyond. Although Steven maintains offices in Cleveland, Solon, Youngstown, and Cincinnati, Ohio, he often represents claimants alleging personal injuries against many of the world's largest companies throughout the country.

Our team:

Dr. Laurel A. Matthews, special counsel to the firm, is both an attorney and a licensed physician trained in general, vascular, thoracic and transplantation surgery. Our clients benefit from her extensive medical knowledge and her ongoing practice as an emergency room doctor. Laurel's extensive civil trial experience speaks for itself. She has successfully represented plaintiffs in both state and federal courts on a wide variety of matters. She has successfully obtained several multi-million dollar results in settlements and verdicts.

Karl E. Novak, special counsel to the firm, is a member of Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC in Charleston, South Carolina. Karl is an aggressive trial lawyer specializing in asbestos, products liability, and complex litigation nationwide. He has gained a reputation winning multi-million dollar results in settlements and verdicts. Karl works closely with the firm as associated counsel, and our clients benefit from his national reputation in prosecuting mesothelioma cases.

Currently, Steven works closely with other national counsel appointed to Steering Committees in the contaminated Heparin national litigation, and the multidistrict litigation involving the birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin.

Steven has been a guest speaker at national litigation summits in medical device and drug campaigns involving DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System Class I Recall and Topamax Litigation.

Dr. Laurel A. Matthews

Laurel is residency trained in general surgery and transplantation and also board certified in emergency medicine. Laurel completed law school at Case Western Reserve University in 1993. She has been continuously engaged in the practice of medicine since 1981 in various arenas, and since 1993 has also practiced law. Most recently, Laurel made the decision to transition her medical practice to focus on critical care. To that end, she completeda one-year fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, in July, 2012.

Laurel completed her first two years of general surgery residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's in Chicago (1981-1983), followed by three years at Michael Reese Hospital (1983-1986). During those years, Laurel had the honor of winning the Young Investigator's Award in Shock Research from the Shock Society, and the Chicago Surgical Research Award. She followed her residency with a very prestigious fellowship in transplantation surgery with Dr. Thomas Starzl at the University of Pittsburgh which was a combined program with a satellite facility at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas under the directorship of Goran Klintmalm, M.D. During that year, Laurel authored numerous clinical and research publications.

Laurel is licensed to practice law in both Ohio and California. Since completing law school in 1993, Laurel continuously practices Emergency Medicine and/or Urgent Care Medicine and practices law in the medico-legal arena as well.

Laurel is one of the founding board members of Life Plant International and she has travelled to the Philippines as a surgical team member assisting on the living related donor nephrectomies and kidney transplant operations as well as our other humanitarian outreach programs. Laurel is certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support [ATLS], Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support [ACLS], and Pediatric Advanced Life Support [PALS].

J. Michael Goldberg

J. Michael Goldberg is of-counsel to the firm. He is a graduate of CSU's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He also is a trial lawyer with experience in handling cases involving lead poisoning, breach of contract, professional negligence, insurance disputes and bad faith, and business torts, including tortious interference and breach of noncompete cases. He also handles cases involving motor vehicle crashes and workplace intentional tort.
