How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Sarah worked her way through law school. During her first year of law school she answered an ad for a law clerk with a small, 2 lawyer bankruptcy firm in Baldwin City, KS. Sarah knew nothing about bankruptcy law when she started with the firm in 2001. It was at this firm where Sarah discovered her passion for bankruptcy law. Yes - PASSION! Bankruptcy law incorporates contract law, tax law, real estate transactions, estate planning, secured transactions, and numerous other areas of the law. Sarah focused the remainder of her law school education on bankruptcy related course. Sarah graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in May of 2004 where she earned the 2004 Medal of Academic Excellence from the American Bankruptcy Institute and was a member of KU's 2004 Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition team.

Sarah was hired on at the firm in Baldwin as an Associate Attorney after graduating law school in 2004. After one years working at the firm, Sarah decided to go out on her own. Her years of experience in small business management prior to law school allowed her to incorporate her love of bankruptcy law and business administration into her own thriving law firm.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Educating oneself about any major life decision is incredibly important and productive. Knowledge is power!
The problem is that there is often too much information out there either on the internet or from well meaning friends and family. Too much information is often confusing, scary and can be just plain wrong!

Bankruptcy law is federal law - which means the laws are the same for all districts in the US. But, there are huge differences in state laws that affect bankruptcy. All judges are different. The bankruptcy trustees are all different. Case law is different for each district court. Every single bankruptcy case is different than the next. So you can't apply everything your read and hear to your own case.

What we tell our potential and current clients is this - if you want more information about bankruptcy - go to our website www.sypherlaw.com and read as much as you can. If you don't have time to ready everything, there is also an audio recording of Sarah answering a lot of questions about bankruptcy.

Sarah wrote most of the content on our site specifically for Kansas clients, so you know it is accurate and is the best source for general information about bankruptcy. But, more importantly, we offer a free, one hour (or more if needed) consultation with Sarah. She can answer all of your questions and give you the best education about your personal bankruptcy case - for free!
