Firm Overview

Helping people to get their fresh start.

I started the firm as a contract attorney for the State of Missouri. I am the sole proprietor. There are several attorneys of counsel.

Example cases

A couple hired me a few years ago. They were being garnished every pay check for two years. They ran out of money for food for their children almost every month, so they were feeding their children cold cereal for supper. They had not made a car payment on their only car for almost 12 months. They filed a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case. These clients were able to successfully complete their bankruptcy case. Their plan payments were less than the amount being garnished from their paychecks.

A single parent hired me to help her keep her car. She needed it to drive to work. We reviewed which chapter of bankruptcy would be better for her. In Chapter 7, her car payment was over $400 per month. In Chapter 13, the plan payment was under $210 per month. This was an easy choice for her; she filed a Chapter 13 and reduced her payments on the car.

A couple filed a Chapter 13 the day before the foreclosure was scheduled. We stopped the foreclosure. They were able to make up the missing payments and sell the house for enough money to pay off their whole bankruptcy case.

A nice lady filed bankruptcy just after her mother passed away. She took time off work to care for her mother. Her own home was scheduled for foreclosure. She was cash poor until her mother's estate was settled, which we expected to happen within the next 12 months. She filed a Chapter 13, and she kept her home. She was able to pay off all of her creditors with her share of her mother's estate.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I enjoy helping people get out of debt and get a fresh start financially.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I want my clients to have good information regarding their legal issues. But the information is only as good as the source. I have read a lot of NOLO information that is very good that I can share with my clients.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

It depends. I help a lot of my real estate clients fine tune their paperwork.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

It depends. Some people are able to do a good job, but when I need legal advice, I hire someone who knows that area of law. No one knows everything.

Susan Bratcher

I worked for Legal Aid of the Western District of Missouri: Representing clients on jailable offenses. Then I was a hearing officer for the State of Missouri. Finally, I became a contract attorney for them and opened my own practice.

I grew up on a farm. My parents wanted us to learn the value of hard work. My dad was a pipe fitter. The farm was his part-time job. I learned those values. I have been working 6 days a week in my practice for years. I just started closing the office on most Saturdays. I need the rest. I also want to spend time with my family, which has grown in the last few years. My husband and I have hosted 8 foreign exchange students from all over the world. We adopted our 7th, our son, Amiran.

Before I went to law school, I was a manager at several different types of businesses including fast food, retail clothing and outside sales. I understand seasonal work, which means for my clients, who work seasonal jobs, that I understand that their plan must reflect real life. So, for my clients we use step payments and seasonal payments. This helps my clients stay in their case even when their income is reduced.

I call bankruptcy law: happy law. It sounds odd. But before I started my own practice I did termination of parental rights cases for the State of Missouri. It was very nasty law. I saw the worst of the worst including parents, who murdered their children. Now, to do the reframe: I won my cases. To this day I have judges who say that looking at me makes them ill as they can't stop thinking about the family law cases that I had before them. So, bankruptcy is happy law. My clients are happy at the end of their cases, for the most part. The same is true with most traffic clients.

My major strength is that I see creative solutions to problems. I think outside the box. For example, some of our clients work seasonal jobs. If possible we make their plan payments adjust to the seasons.

I take the time to look for programs that can help our clients. I believe that I can make someone's life better by sharing information about programs that can help them. I try to make a difference in the life of everyone who walks in my door.

I don't sugar coat the truth for clients. I believe that clients should know where they stand. I do this with kindness and concern. I want to know what options I have and I think that clients want the same things. I explain the law to my clients. I think that clients really like to be treated with respect and kindness. I don't believe that needing help is a sign of weakest. I think that getting help is a sign of strength.

My clients have things ... they have had good jobs and they have cars and house. They want to keep their things. I do my best to provide options for them to keep the things that they want to keep, if their budget allows. I also help my clients come to terms with it may be time to give up something.

Personal interests:

Throughout the years my husband and I have sponsored 10 foreign exchange students. Cary from Accra, Ghana - Vera from Ufa, Russia - Pablo from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina - Sunny from Hong Kong - Bunyod from Uzbekistan - Jennet from Turkmenistan - Sasha from Moldova and Amiran from the Republic of Georgia - Julia from Germany and Kate - from Russia. We also had another exchange student living with us, who was originally my parents student. His name is Aziz from Uzbekistan. I just started working on my family tree in My other interest would be my dogs, cats, and fish.
