Firm Overview

Steve E. Chlouber's legal practice is focused on three areas of law: family law (dissolution of marriage, paternity, child support and decree modification issues); general civil litigation (business litigation, personal injury and collection/foreclosure defense) and Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Example cases

As an example of my general litigation practice, I co-counseled a jury trial in which a trial verdict of 3.2 million was obtained in a libel case against a publishing company. Over the years, I have tried personal injury cases and fraud cases. My family law practice contains too many cases to mention, but in my family law practice I strive to strike a balance between achieving a fair objective for the client and balancing the legal fee expense that the client incurs.

Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

Possibly, depending on the circumstances of the matter.

What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

My practice consists of over twenty years of work in family law and general civil litigation. Many of my peers in the legal community charge in excess of my hourly rate. I like to keep my hourly rate below the prevailing rate for an attorney with my experience in order to be able to work on a client's file more directly.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

Mediation is used frequently to resolve dissolution of marriage and civil cases.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

Yes.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

We are dedicated to not only providing the client with the immediate legal services needed, but to advise the client on future legal issues that may arise and to help prevent problems from occurring in the future.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients must understand the legal process that he or she is going through, whether it is a dissolution of marriage, bankruptcy or civil litigation case. It is imperative that the client has a general understanding of the legal issues involved, and I strive to discuss and make sure the client understands how the legal and factual issues can affect his or her case.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes, and I normally charge an fixed hourly rate of at least ½ an hour's work depending of the documents reviewed.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Yes, I have done so many times over the years, and I generally charge an hourly rate for my services.
