How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

We found our primary areas of practice evolved from our Family Law/Domestic Relations practice. Bankruptcy was an area of practice many of our Family Law clients needed assistance with and was a natural fit for our firm.

Jon Schulte

Jon engages in general practice with a focus on family law, criminal defense, bankruptcy, collections (creditor and debtor), estate planning, contracts, and appearances. He is admitted to practice in the state of Indiana and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Jon is also admitted in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Jon grew up in Louisville, KY and is a class of 2000 graduate of Saint Xavier High School. Prior to joining Smith, Carpenter, Thompson, Fondrisi, and Cummins, LLC Jon practiced for one of Kentuckiana

Nick Karaffa

Nick engages in a general practice with a focus on bankruptcy, criminal defense and family law. He is admitted to practice in Indiana and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Nick grew up in Southern Indiana and is a 2002 graduate of New Albany High School. Prior to joining Smith, Carpenter, Fondrisi, Cummins & Lewis, Nick obtained legal experience while clerking for the Honorable J. Terrence Cody in the Floyd County Circuit Court in 2008 and clerking for a New Albany law firm where he focused on criminal defense and family law issues in 2009 and 2010. While in law school, Nick was a three year member of the Honor Council and was named to the Dean

Cheryl Carpenter

Cheryl Carpenter concentrates her practice in the areas of Family Law and Probate. In her family law practice, Cheryl regularly handles paternity, child custody disputes, child support, and dissolution proceedings. She often represents divorce clients with larger marital estates, and she is an experienced and skilled advocate for clients, whether their case is concluded by a negotiated settlement, trial proceeding in the courtroom, or at the appellate level.

Among other accomplishments since she joined the firm in 1986, Cheryl has been certified as a Certified Family Law Specialist by the Family Law Certification Board, an honor held by less then 100 practitioners in the State of Indiana. She has also trained in collaborative family law and is a family law mediator registered by the Indiana Supreme Court Commission for Continuing Legal Education. Cheryl is often appointed by Courts to advocate for children in difficult child custody cases as a Guardian Ad Litem. Before joining the firm, she was in solo practice and also practiced for several years with Legal Aid Senior Citizens Law Project.

Cheryl routinely represents individuals and families going through some of the most difficult times of their lives. She is an advocate for individuals and families in crisis and understands and relishes in her role of helping clients prepare for and cope with the anxiety and emotion that comes along with courtroom conflict.

Jenny White

Jenny White joined the firm as the newest associate attorney in May, 2011. Currently, Jenny is admitted to practice in Kentucky. She focuses her practice in the area of Family Law, engaging in dissolution proceedings, paternity, child custody disputes, and child support. Additionally, Jenny practices as a guardian ad litem, parenting time coordinator and mediator. Jenny gained experience in these areas of law by serving as an extern for the Children

Mary Fondrisi

For over 35 years, Mary has lived with her family in Clark County and worked in the Southern Indiana area. Initially, Mary was a real estate broker. During that time she successfully helped her husband begin a business that still thrives over three decades later. Mary later worked in both the trust department and the loan department of a local bank while attending Bellarmine University, where she received her B.S. degree in Commerce, cum laude and was honored with the Wilson E. Wyatt Fellowship Award for Academic Excellence. Mary obtained her law degree from the University of Louisville in 1992 and began practicing with the firm of Smith Carpenter Law after clerking for Judge Clementine Barthold.

Over time, Mary has acquired broad experience representing individuals and small businesses in a wide range of legal areas including starting businesses, real estate, contracts, estate planning, guardianships, wrongful death, probate, social security disability, and family law including custody, visitation, support, paternity, adoptions, and relocation. Rachele Cummins

Rachele L. Cummins engages in a general civil practice. She enjoys providing comprehensive legal services to individuals, businesses, and community organizations. Rachele has extensive courtroom experience and is a skilled and aggressive advocate for her clients. From a simple real estate matter to a complex civil litigation case, Rachele represents her clients in a dedicated and professional manner.

Rachele has been with the firm since 2000, starting as an Associate Attorney shortly after taking the bar in 2000 and becoming a Partner in the firm in 2006. She is a life long resident of Southern Indiana. She is married and has three children.
