How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

One of my influences during high school was a prosecuting attorney, so I have been interested in criminal law from an early age. During my undergraduate work, I studied Criminology and Political Science. During law school, I took elective courses in the area of criminal law.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I recommend that clients become educated about the law that applies to their situations. I am in favor of clients educating themselves on legal issues, but I would advise people to be cautious in what they conclude when reading from second-hand sources rather than directly from statutes, regulations, and cases.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents prepared by my clients, but this situation does not arise frequently in criminal and DUI/OVI cases.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I would not want my doctor to coach me on how to perform my own surgery, and I do not recommend that people represent themselves in DUI/OVI cases or criminal cases.

Shawn R. Dominy

I have practiced criminal defense for my entire career. In law school, I worked for a criminal defense attorney. After graduating from law school in 1997, I formed a partnership with that attorney.

I have handled thousands of cases, ranging from speeding tickets to murder, and everything in between. I have taken many cases to trial. Although this may be a client's first time facing this experience, I have been there before. I have undergone specialized training for DUI/OVI defense, including a program in the science of evidential alcohol testing, a class in field sobriety testing, and courses through the National College for DUI Defense.

My strength is that I focus my practice on one area of law so I can do it with excellence. My goal is to effectively represent my clients. To that end, I conduct thorough research and analysis of the facts and the applicable law, then communicate effectively with my clients, prosecutors and judges. Effectiveness does not equal aggressiveness. I communicate with prosecutors and judges with professionalism and respect, just as I do with my clients and people in general.

Personal interests:

I play drums at my church and for a local band.
