Firm Overview

I represent clients in all sorts of criminal cases, from misdemeanors, including DUI, to serious felonies, including sex offenses, drug trafficking and murder. I also represent juveniles charged with crimes.

After becoming a lawyer in 1999, I established a solo practice in Chico, and then decided to work as a Public Defender in Mendocino and Solano Counties. In 2007, I returned to Chico to reestablish my private practice.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I want to help people. Most other areas of law deal with battles over money. My clients are fighting for their lives. That is far more rewarding to me.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I want to make sure my clients are fully informed about legal issues in their cases, and help them make the important decisions with my guidance. It is important to understand a client's situation and goals. For some people, even a conviction for a "minor" offense can be devastating.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

My clients' input and feedback is always important, but I prefer to prepare documents myself. Even a minor mistake can make a huge difference, not to mention the fact that most courts will not accept documents filed by a defendant who has an attorney.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

In some very simple matters, I can offer some general guidance, but there is no substitute for a skilled, experienced attorney, especially in a serious criminal case. I've spent several days in a jury trial where it all boils down to a single word. Years of experience are the only way to prepare for those situations, which can arise without warning.

Robert L. Marshall

I was the senior non-management lawyer in the Mendocino County Public Defender's Office, and walked many new lawyers through their first trials, in addition to handling serious felonies myself. Prior to becoming an attorney, I worked as a television news reporter, anchor, producer and editor in several California cities and a number of other states.

As a journalist, I learned to work under constant deadline pressure, and write clearly and accurately. As an on-camera reporter and anchor, I also developed the public speaking skills necessary to be an advocate for my clients in court.

As a journalist I learned to write and speak well, but it also made me a good listener, which is just as important. I love what I do, and it is a privilege to stand up to the government for my clients. I spent many hours studying and researching new legal issues, because my strength is being better prepared than the other side.

Personal interests:

I love to go skiing in the winter. During the warmer months, I'm involved in motorcycle road racing as a race official, and I also spend some time riding on the track myself. In November, 2011, I will be joining current and former World Championship racers on a ride through Zambia to raise money for an organization that helps transport medical personnel to remote regions in Africa.
