How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I have always had a passion for criminal law as well as a talent for negotiation and argument. Being a defense attorney allows me to use those talents to stand up for others who are unable to stand up for themselves without help.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The attorney-client relationship is a partnership in which each person brings a particular expertise to the table. The client is the expert on the facts of the case. Ordinarily, the attorney is the expert on the legal issues. It is important that both client and attorney work together and share information and ideas in order to develop the most effective litigation strategy possible for a case.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

It is the responsibility of an attorney to communicate with clients and review all information necessary to the resolution of the case.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No.

Phil H. Brown

I was a chief prosecutor for 14 years. As a prosecutor, I handled all facets of criminal and juvenile prosecutions on a full range of cases from misdemeanors to homicide. I acted as lead counsel for numerous felony jury trials, including murder, armed robbery, drug trafficking, gang-related offenses and habitual criminal cases. I litigated high profile and complex cases. I conducted grand jury proceedings, preliminary hearings, sentencings and probation revocations. I litigated all phases of juvenile delinquency cases from the charging decision through contested hearing and appeal, and I litigated numerous hearings to certify juveniles to adult status. I instructed new and experienced law enforcement officers regarding criminal law and procedure. I advised law enforcement regarding investigations, search warrant preparation and charging decisions. I wrote appellate briefs to the Nevada Supreme Court and United States Supreme Court and conducted oral argument before the Nevada Supreme Court. I responded to post-conviction writs and motions. The depth and breadth of my experience in criminal prosecution is a tremendous asset in being able to effectively defend criminal cases.

Most lawyers practice with only a Juris Doctor degree. I went to school past my J.D. to also receive an LL.M. (or Master's Degree) in Criminal Law. This additional year of education allowed me to develop specialized knowledge in federal sentencing, white collar crime and advanced criminal and scientific evidence.

I previously worked as a law clerk for Judge Harvey Goldstein, which allows me to understand how judges reason and analyze cases. Through an immigration clinic, I represented undocumented immigrants in immigration court during exclusion and deportation proceedings. I also worked with the Federal Defender's Office, representing indigent clients in United States District Court during initial hearings.

My experience as a former chief prosecutor for 14 years makes me uniquely qualified to represent clients in criminal and juvenile courts. I am an aggressive trial lawyer with extensive experience in all facets of trial work. I have a direct, no-nonsense approach to lawyering and believe in giving 100% in order to assist my client in reaching their litigation goal.
