Firm Overview

The Law Office of Peter Irvine provides legal services to individuals and businesses with focus on (1) entertainment law, (2) residential real estate transactions, (3) small business advising and (4) criminal defense.

Having spent over 25 years in the entertainment business, I offer a firsthand understanding of, and pragmatic solutions to, the situations of my creative clients. Services include advising on contracts, copyright, trademarks, litigation and licensing.

For people buying or selling a home, I offer personal service and quick response throughout the purchase and sale process.

For businesses, I assist in formation of entities, legal compliance, contract review, leasing, trademarks, and, when necessary, litigation. My business clients include restaurants, design firms, record labels and health care providers.

The right to effective counsel is a fundamental constitutional right and a vital part of the procedural checks and balances on government power. I work part-time as a public defender, representing indigent people accused of crimes. This experience has given me a thorough familiarity with the district courts of Hampshire County.

From my office in the arts mecca of Northampton, I assist an international clientele. This small town in Western Massachusetts has a long history as a center of creative activity in all the arts. My arts clients include musicians, writers, designers, filmmakers and theater directors.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I enjoy helping people and using my expertise to find creative solutions to problems.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

We believe in empowering clients. We want people to make educated decisions, so we guide people to appropriate resources and provide analysis and opinions based on our own knowledge and research so that people have a full understanding of the complexities of the legal issues at hand.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We are happy to review documents prepared by clients and provide assistance to help them meet their legal needs. Proper preparation can reduce your legal costs. We strive for an appropriate balance, spending enough time for a proper solution, without letting the costs outstrip the benefits.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This depends on the case and the client. There are some scenarios where clients would be able to represent themselves well but, there are other scenarios where a client would most benefit from professional representation.

Peter Irvine

Before becoming an attorney, I was a professional musician, traveling the world for much of the 1990s with the band Cordelia's Dad. I have also worked in print publishing, theater and film.

My extensive experience in the arts helps me connect with clients and meet them in their personal circumstances. When you've played music in front of a crowd of 10,000 people, delivering a closing argument to a jury of 6 is that much easier. Having lived in numerous countries has given me an appreciation for cultural and economic diversity that strengthens my connection with my clients.

We aim for collaboration and negotiation over confrontation. We are responsive, thorough, and affordable.

Personal interests:

Parenting, community social singing, softball, and snorkeling in the Virgin Islands.
