LOS ANGELES ESTATE PLANNING & TAX ATTORNEYS

Firm Overview

The firm's partner is certified by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization in two specialties: Taxation Law and Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. As of December 2008, out of over 50,000 attorneys in Los Angeles County, there are only 22 dually certified in those specialties.

The origins of Olincy & Karpel go back to 1930, when George R. Olincy began his business career as a CPA; he then passed the bar and until his death practiced tax, probate and estate planning law as well as accounting,. Dan Olincy (who had passed the CPA exam while in law school) joined his father in 1956, after three years in Army JAG.

George Olincy was one of the first attorney-CPAs, and managed a unique blend of the skills of the two professions, adding an accountant's care for detail to a lawyer's sense of the big picture. His esteem among his peers was shown by his choice as one of the first presenters at the USC Tax Institute.

Dan has also presented several papers there, and has spoken to and written for other, comparable, highly specialized audiences. He was a Chair of the State Bar Tax Commitee (now the Section) and the Chair of the Tax Advisory Commission, Board of Legal Specialization. In 1983, Dan received the California State Bar Tax Section's V. Judson Klein award for outstanding achievement and public service. He is one of about 400 members of The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.

Philip Karpel joined George and Dan in 1981, and has been a partner since 1982. Previously, Phil had almost ten years of experience in accounting (he passed the CPA examination in 1972), tax law and probate, estate planning and trust law. He has since lectured numerous times in the areas of tax, estate planning, trust and probate law for such organizations as the California Continuing Education of the Bar and the National Business Institute.

Both Phil and Dan are dually certified specialists (State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization) in Taxation Law and in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law. As of December 2008, out of over 50,000 attorneys in Los Angeles County, there are only 22 dually certified in those specialties.

The firm's strength lies in combining the two certified specialist areas to find imaginative solutions to problems including using cutting-edge and standard planning devices to solve them. Together they work to carry on George's legacy.
