O'Connor & Thomas, P.C.

O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. was founded in 1840 under the name of Davis & Crawford. The current firm is the direct descendant of Davis & Crawford and is the oldest law firm in continuous practice west of the Mississippi.

Firm Overview

Among the prior partners of the firm are an aide to President Lincoln during the Civil War, an Attorney General of Iowa, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, an Iowa Supreme Court Justice, and numerous other judges and dignitaries.

O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. has the unique distinction of being the only law firm in Iowa that has had two partners, William Avery Smith and E. Marshall Thomas, receive the Award of Merit of the Iowa State Bar Association.

While the firm has changed its name many times since 1840 to reflect membership, it became O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. in 1984. Today the firm consists of shareholders John C. O'Connor, A. John Arenz, Chad C. Leitch, Richard K. Whitty, James E. Goodman, Jr., Davin C. Curtiss, Paul J. Sigwarth, Peter D. Arling, Joshua P. Weidemann, Christopher C. Fry, senior attorneys Brendan T. A. John Arenz

John Arenz was born in Dubuque, Iowa. John graduated magna cum laude from Marquette University in 1975, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He obtained his law degree, cum laude, from Georgetown University in 1978. While at Georgetown, John was a member of the Student Editorial Board of The Tax Lawyer. He returned to Dubuque after law school and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1978, joining our firm that same year. He was later admitted to the Wisconsin Bar in 1985. John is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, the Western District of Wisconsin, and the United States Supreme Court. He is currently a member of the American, Iowa State, and Dubuque County Bar Associations, as well as the State Bar of Wisconsin. John is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Iowa Defense Counsel Association and the International Amusement and Leisure Defense Association. He is also an associate member of the American Association for Justice and the Iowa Association for Justice. John is certified as a Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. His general practice includes personal injury, insurance defense, workers compensation, trial law and litigation.

Peter D. Arling

Peter D. Arling was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1977. He graduated magna cum laude from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, and received his law degree from Creighton University in 2003, magna cum laude. While at Creighton University, he served as President of the International Moot Court Board. Mr. Arling joined O'Connor & Thomas, P.C., based in Dubuque, Iowa, in 2003 upon admission to the Iowa Bar, and currently serves as an attorney, shareholder, director and secretary for O'Connor & Thomas, P.C. Peter was admitted to the Illinois Bar and the Minnesota Bar in 2004, and he was admitted to the Wisconsin Bar in 2005. Mr. Arling has also been admitted to practice before the Northern and Southern District of Iowa Federal and Bankruptcy Courts, the Western District of Wisconsin Federal and Bankruptcy Courts, the Central District of Illinois Federal and Bankruptcy Courts, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Peter is a member of the American Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Wisconsin State Bar Association, and the Dubuque County Bar Association. He is a current member of the Business Section Council for the Iowa Bar Association Business Law Section, through which he makes regular presentations to other attorneys and groups in Iowa. Mr. Arling is also an Executive Board Member for the Northeast Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America, where he also serves as the current Membership Vice President. While Mr. Arling maintains a general practice, he focuses much of his effort on business litigation and business transactions, consumer and commercial debt collection, and real estate related matters.

Ann M. Curran

Ann M. Curran was born in Dubuque, Iowa. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in 1989, and was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. Ann attended Cornell Law School in Ithaca, New York, where she was a member of the Public Interest Law Journal. She was awarded the Herzog Prize for Public Interest legal work and earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1993. In 2004 she obtained her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Binghamton University, where she concentrated in healthcare administration. From 1993 to 2000 she worked in private law practice in upstate New York, focusing on administrative litigation. From 2000 to 2013 Ann served as in house counsel to a medical services corporation, concentrating on health care and employment law. Via a subsidiary consulting firm, Ann provided healthcare consulting services (Medicare compliance and HIPAA-focused) to physicians groups, hospitals and other medical entities. She is currently a member of the New York and Iowa bar associations. Ann's practice includes, but is not limited to the areas of healthcare law, Medicare regulations, HIPAA, and employment law. She speaks regionally and nationally on healthcare legal topics.

Davin C. Curtiss

Davin C Curtiss was born in Silvis, Illinois. He is a 1992 summa cum laude graduate from Marquette University and obtained his law degree with high distinction from the University of Iowa in 1995. Davin was the Note and Comment Editor for the Journal of Corporation Law in 1994-95 and authored "Fair Labor Standards Act and Child Labor in Agriculture," Journal of Corporation Law, in 1995, which received the Award of Excellence for Student Scholarship from the American Agricultural Law Association. He joined the firm in 1995 upon being admitted to the Iowa Bar. In 1998, he was admitted to the Illinois Bar, followed by admission to the Wisconsin Bar in 1999. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. Davin is a member of the American, Iowa State, Illinois State, and Dubuque County Bar Associations and the State Bar of Wisconsin. In 1998, he received the Pro Bono Award of the Iowa State Bar Association and Volunteer Lawyers Project. He was elected to the Dubuque County Magistrate Appointing Commission in 2002. James E. Goodman, Jr.

James E Goodman, Jr. was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. He graduated cum laude from Illinois State University in 1985, where he majored in political science and music. He obtained his law degree with distinction in 1988 from the University of Iowa. He was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1988 and the Illinois Bar in 2001. Jim joined the firm in 1994 following positions as an Associate attorney with Shaff & Farwell in Clinton, Iowa, and as a Trust Officer for National Bank of Waterloo and American Trust & Savings Bank in Dubuque. He is a member of the Iowa State, Illinois State, and American Bar Associations and former member of the Tri-State Estate Planning Council, serving as President from 1993-94. McKenzie Rae Hill was born in Clinton, Iowa, but lived in Iowa City for the majority of her childhood. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In 2012, McKenzie received her Juris Doctorate with high honors from the Drake University Law School where she was a student attorney at the Drake Legal Clinic and a member of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. Upon graduation from law school, McKenzie was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif. She joined the firm in August, 2012 and is licensed in Iowa and Illinois. Stephen C. Krumpe

Stephen C Krumpe was born in Hagerstown, Maryland. In 1978, he graduated magna cum laude from Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. He received his Master of Arts degree in history in 1979 and law degree (with high distinction) in 1984, both from the University of Iowa. He joined O'Connor & Thomas, P.C., in February 1985 upon being admitted to the Iowa Bar. Steve became licensed to practice law in Wisconsin in 1987, and in Illinois in 1997. John C. O'Connor

John C. O'Connor was born in Dubuque, Iowa. He is the third generation of the O'Connor family to practice with this firm, joining the firm in 1976. John attended Loyola University of the South and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1971. He obtained his law degree from Creighton University in 1974 and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1974. John is a Commissioned Reserve Officer in the U.S. Army reaching the rank of Captain. He has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1975. He is a member of the Iowa State and Dubuque County Bar Associations, the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants, and is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. John is one of the founding Directors of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and served as Chair for five years and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Foundation. He served on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dubuque since 1982, and is a past President. John has and is serving many other non-profits in a variety of ways. Joshua P. Weidemann

Joshua P. Weidemann was born in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in 2000. Josh attended the University of Iowa College of Law, earning his Juris Doctor with High Distinction in 2004. Upon graduation from law school, Josh was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif. He joined the firm in 2004, upon his admission to the Iowa Bar. In May of 2012 Josh became licensed in Illinois. He currently belongs to the Dubuque County, Iowa, and American Bar Associations. Josh is a member of the Dubuque County Young Lawyers. He is also a member of the Tri-State Estate Planning Council (past President) and the Iowa State Bar Association Probate, Trust & Estate Planning Section and Council. Richard K. ("Rich") Whitty

Richard K. Whitty earned his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating with High Distinction. He also earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Whitty has been admitted to practice in Iowa since 1980. Through Martindale-Hubbell, his peers have rated him "Preeminent", the highest rating accorded for legal knowledge, analytical capabilities, judgement, communication ability, legal experience, and ethical standards.

Mr. Whitty belongs to the Dubuque County, Iowa, and American Bar Associations, the Iowa Defense Counsel Association, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel, and the Defense Research Institute, Inc. He has served on the Iowa District 1A Judicial Nominating Committee.

Mr. Whitty has also been active as a member of the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce, serving as the Chair and a Member of the Board of Directors. He also served as Board Chair of Stonehill Franciscan Services and Director of the Stonehill Benevolent Foundation. He served for many years on the Medical Moral Commission of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
