Thompson Law Office has a general practice that focuses on serving the needs of individuals and small to mid-sized businesses in various areas, including but not limited to bankruptcy, divorce, child custody, business law, employment law, unemployment benefits, estate planning, probate, and homeowners associations.
Thompson Law Office was founded in 2007 by attorney Ben Thompson, who had a vision for a revolutionary approach to the practice of law that prioritized the accessibility and affordability of quality legal counsel. The revolution has been driven by emerging technologies and a commitment to superior client service. The firm has grown quickly into one of west Omaha's largest law firms by recruiting and attracting attorneys with outstanding backgrounds that can provide quality professional legal advice. The legal professionals at Thompson Law Office represent a diverse group of talented individuals that provide a perspective built on experience in various areas of the law.
I have litigated a number of disputes including financial exploitation and guardianship matters. Financial exploitation suits often involve intense personal histories and broken trust. I have taken on clients both to obtain guardianship over a loved one in need of protection and on the other hand to resist a petition and stand up for a client's right to keep making decisions for him or herself. I have also helped many people to obtain essential Medicaid benefits to provide for long term care needs.

I offer all of my prospective clients a free "meet and greet." It is a 15 minute meeting where you can learn more about the firm, my qualifications, and experience. I also offer a consultation for up to an hour, which allows me to learn more about your particular situation and provide responsible advice to you about your legal rights and obligations. I do charge a fee for this consultation, but it is generally a discounted flat fee which is dependent on the type of case.
The need for some legal services can arise unexpectedly and cause a financial strain during an already stressful time. When appropriate, Thompson Law Office clients are provided alternative billing arrangement choices, which may include flat fees, hybrid fees (hourly capped at a particular amount, then contingency), monthly retainers, payment plans, or typical hourly rates. All major credit cards are accepted as well. Ask to find out whether your legal matter is appropriate for an innovative billing arrangement.

I was very fortunate growing up to live near all of my grandparents and to have great relationships with them. I continued working with the elderly through service activities at Creighton, and the elder law clinic at St. Thomas, both as a student and then as a teacher. I've learned a lot about the priorities and concerns of people as they age as well as the rules and systems that they will confront. I enjoy helping people meet their goals and maintain dignity as they age. Self-determination and dignity are key values for me in estate planning and probate matters.
Having an informed client makes our representation more effective and demonstrates a client's commitment to the cause. I strive to educate my clients on legal issues while encouraging them to be engaged in the process and seek answers to their legal questions.
Under appropriate circumstances I will review client-prepared documents and make suggestions in the interest of cost-effective legal services.
I recognize that some disputes do not justify an attorney appearing in court and will work with "pro se" clients who choose to represent themselves in court. In fact, in Nebraska's small claims courts, parties are not allowed to have attorneys. Oftentimes I can assist after a client is awarded a judgment by taking steps to collect on the judgment or "garnish" or "execute" on the judgment debtor's property.
I began my legal career teaching the Elder Law Practice Group of the Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services at the University of St. Thomas. I was responsible for representing clients, supervising student case work, teaching a classroom component of the course, caseload management, and other administrative duties.
I have also worked in a variety of private practice settings before joining Thompson Law Office.
I had a fairly unique beginning to my legal career, teaching in a law school clinic. I was able to work with many new professionals and was able to help each of them to develop their confidence and their own style of advocacy. This has helped me to keep an open mind about what services will be best to meet client goals. The clinic also had a partnership with other schools in the University, which helped me to learn to work with diverse professionals to meet client needs in a cohesive manner. I know what an attorney is best for, when to call in or consult other professionals, and how to use the contributions of those other professionals to meet client goals.
I have had a great deal of success as a collaborator and team leader who draws on the strengths of those around me while shoring up efforts with my own contributions to the cause. Recognizing and utilizing the strengths and abilities of everyone involved (clients, attorneys, staff, and other professionals) is essential to efficiency and success. So, within the "team" I collaborate and lead well. If and when confrontation or litigation is involved, I am direct and unapologetic about our position.Personal interests:
I have a young child so much of my fun time involves the zoo, swimming, singing, dinosaurs and other youthful pursuits. I have always enjoyed sailing and a variety of music; I should get back to listening to more jazz.
