How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I have an affinity for numbers and I enjoy the strategic side of bankruptcy practice. I learned very early that there is a huge difference between the results obtained with the help of a skilled, highly experienced bankruptcy professional versus an attorney who dabbles in the field and thinks bankruptcy is simply form preparation.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I welcome people to educate themselves in advance. I have a high success rate of Chapter 13 clients and believe that this is in part caused by the extra steps we take to make sure that people are knowledgeable about the process prior to taking the plunge.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

No.  In my experience it is more efficient and economical to do the entire case.  When in the past I have coached or reviewed documents we end up generating more questions than answers.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Not willing to do so.

Michael O'Brien

Sole Practitioner, Associate with Grafe, Oliveros & Associates prior to current partnership.

My strong dedication to my family makes me a better lawyer. I often counsel people on their decision making and help them to focus on long term needs of themselves and their family and how often bankruptcy can solve an immediate problem and help them to meet those long term needs. As I often say - Visa does not care if you have food on the table at home, and your family would rather have food than a stellar credit rating.

I am empathetic to the financial situation my clients find themselves in. I am not judgmental and recognize that most people want to avoid bankruptcy like the plague. I educate my clients on bankruptcy options and non-bankruptcy alternatives so that they can make an intelligent choice. I have the integrity to advise potential clients when I do not think bankruptcy is their best option and to help them formulate a different strategy.

Personal interests:

If I am not working, I am spending time with my wife and four kids enjoying the Pacific Northwest outdoors, and the many sports activities of my children.
