Firm Overview

In 2008, I moved to Portland, OR, and opened my solo office. I currently work with adidas America, individual artists, and a growing number of medium and small businesses.

I focus on Intellectual Property and Business Development. This includes helping individuals and companies create and maximize reputation and revenue with the following tools: trademarks, copyrights, licensing strategies, contract creation, business structures, etc.

Example cases

I have prepared and filed trademark applications for international companies, as well as small businesses. I have helped companies start up, and helped others dissolve. I have represented a wide variety of clients, including: authors, musicians, sculptors, restaurateurs and chefs, fashion houses, biotech companies, animation studios, a computer service companies, among others. I love when clients present a unique challenge, and I encourage any interested potential client to call with preliminary questions.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I am a team player who enjoys participating in the creation process. I have always loved words, and I feel absolutely blessed to be able to work with contracts on a daily basis. I've found business law to be engaging and challenging.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I whole-heartedly encourage my clients to educate themselves, and to use me as a resource to that end. I go to great lengths to make myself available via telephone and email for any questions. During initial consultations, I spend a great deal of time educating clients on their current situation, and what they can expect during our time together. I provide articles, websites, and recommendations of people with whom to speak throughout our relationship. I have created a number of easy-to-read articles and a business formation comparison chart for my business clients to use as a reference tool. Of course, Nolo is a tremendous legal reference, and I am proud to associate with such an accessible educational resource.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am always willing to review documents for my clients, whether prepared by them or provided to them by another party. I am always honest with my clients, and I will let them know if reviewing the document is a waste of time and money for them, as well.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to coach clients who wish to represent themselves in certain circumstances. They say: "he who represents himself has a fool for a client," and this is often true. Please feel free to call or email and I'll be happy to discuss your particular situation.

Melissa B Jaffe

Prior to my time in Portland, I lived and worked in San Francisco for the following companies: Genentech, Inc., Geron Corporation, Six Degrees Records, and LucasArts. While in law school, I worked with California Lawyers for the Arts (CLA), a well-respected not-for-profit that provides legal services to artists.

As noted above, I write and dance to express my creativity. I also practice meditation and yoga. These activities help to keep me focused, and open to my clients' particular issues. Too often I hear clients complain about an attorney who "didn't listen to them" or "treated them like a number." This is not my style in life or in legal practice.

My strengths are my organization and my efficiency. I have a cap for the number of clients I am prepared to accept at one time. This practice allows me to remain true to my style, which is to remain approachable and available for my clients to the best of my ability.

Personal interests:

Personally, I love to bike, practice yoga, write, draw, and dance. When I am not in my office, I enjoy spending time outside with my partner, and our three dogs.
