How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

The practice of consumer bankruptcy law is something that I take very seriously. Too many consumers are taken advantage of by creditors and receive too much harassment to pay back debt that they reasonably cannot afford to pay back. Using my skills as an attorney, I am glad to help assist my clients receive the debt relief that they are in great need of, while also being able to help some of clients keep their homes and vehicles which they otherwise could not afford without filing for bankruptcy.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe that clients should always become educated as to what is going on in their case. I take great pride in being able to be the one to help educate my potential clients, along with the clients that retain my services, as this is an ongoing process. Whether we are dealing with a legal issue or a procedural matter through the court system, it is very important that my clients are familiar with the process and make a fully informed decision as to how they would like their case to be handled. One of the biggest responsibilities we have as lawyers is to make sure that our clients are educated and prepared for the undertaking of their specific case. We are not just attorneys handling a client's case, we are also counselors of the law, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

It is very important that my clients prepare certain paperwork when it comes time to filing their bankruptcy. We will work on that process together and I will make sure that everything that is prepared by my clients is also reviewed by me, the attorney responsible for the handling of their bankruptcy case, and not a paralegal.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Should a client wish to represent him or herself, I will help them as best as possible and refer them to the appropriate authorities to gain as much information as possible.

Melanie Sacks

Previously, I was a partner in a small law firm handling cases in bankruptcy, worker's compensation, and personal injury. Prior to that employment, I worked for a worker's compensation law firm and the law firm of Harrell & Harrell, P.A.

Understanding people and having compassion when a client needs you the most is something that I pride myself on. While working in a high volume practice as a personal injury and worker's compensation lawyer, I learned to always listen to my clients no matter how busy I got with my cases. I take that experience with me into the practice of bankruptcy law. I always listen to the needs of my clients and make sure that they are given individual attention while never receiving treatment as if they were just a file number.

I am personable and honest. I will always explain the law to my clients, and put them at ease so that they are fully informed and comfortable with their case. I will always listen to my clients and make sure that they understand their rights under the bankruptcy laws.

Personal interests:

My personal interests at this time would be to try and help all of my clients get through their bankruptcy cases, along with providing all of my potential clients with the necessary information in order to obtain debt relief. Other than work, my personal interests are my two beautiful boys and my darling husband - and let's not forget the FLORIDA GATORS!
