We are a local Chattanooga law firm dedicated to helping individuals with their Social Security Disability and SSI claims based on disability. We have many satisfied clients from southeast Tennessee, north Georgia and north Alabama.
With decades of experience in Social Security cases, we work very hard for our disabled clients who are facing what is usually the hardest challenges of their lives.

At McCarthy, Murphy and Preslar, P.C., from your very first meeting, you will meet face to face with the lawyer who will handle your case should we agree to work together on your claim.

We help keep our clients' claims on track at the paperwork steps of the process, and help you understand the process.

We again meet with our clients face to face to get them ready for court, write a legal brief arguing your case, and work with our clients to help you present your case at all court appearances before Social Security.

There is no legal fee until your case is won.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

We have chosen to focus exclusively on Social Security disability cases, unlike many other law firms who devote much of their time to other types of cases such as worker's compensation or personal injury. We feel this allows us to give superior representation and service to our disabled clients.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

We understand that no one chooses to be disabled and that the disability application process can be very stressful, frustrating and frightening. We treat all our clients with dignity and respect as we work through this difficult process.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Our attorneys personally conduct your initial consultation and are available to you directly throughout the course of your case. You will know at your very first appointment which of our attorneys will be handling your claim and we will work closely with you to present the very best case on your behalf.

We will assist you with filing your initial application for benefits and with filing any subsequent appeals.

Nora McCarthy

Nora A. McCarthy represents disabled people before the Social Security Administration on their Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income claims. She has been practicing law for 34 years. She formerly engaged in an extensive civil trial law practice that allowed her to try numerous cases before state, federal and appellate courts. Now, however, Nora has chosen to focus exclusively on helping the disabled to receive all of the benefits to which they are entitled under the Social Security disability laws. She has represented hundreds of disability applicants at the hearing, Appeals Council and/or Federal Court levels.

Nora is a 1981 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of law. She graduated in 1978, cum laude, from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1981; to the U.S. District Court (E.D. of Tennessee) in 1982; to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1986. She is a member of the Tennessee and Chattanooga Bar Associations, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) and served as past president of the Tennessee Lawyer's Association for Women.

When not practicing law, Nora enjoys teaching college students as a Scuba Instructor and traveling to exciting Scuba locations.

Peter Murphy

Peter B. Murphy is a native of New York and the youngest of seven children. He attended public schools there and earned scholarships to Canisius College, in Buffalo, New York, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science and Communication in 1994.

Peter earned his Juris Doctor in 1997 from Washington & Lee University Law School, in Lexington, Virginia. Immediate ly after law school, he moved to Chattanooga where he has represented disabled people in claims for Social Security Disability benefits ever since.

Peter is admitted to practice law in both Tennessee and North Carolina, but because of the Federal nature of Social Security, he can represent people in their Social Security Disability or SSI claims in any State.

When asked why he enjoys representing people in these claims Mr. Murphy said, "I once described what I do to a minister, toward the end of the explanation, he said; 'so it's really more like a ministry.' I thought about that, and decided he was right. This work is far more rewarding than any other legal work that I've done for businesses or corporations."

In addition to his work with the disabled, Peter Murphy represents District Nine on the Chattanooga City Council, is on the Board of Directors of River City Company, Chattanooga's downtown redevelopment corporation, the Board of Directors of the Industrial Development Board of Hamilton County, and is a past and present member of the YMCA of Greater Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Track Club, Friends of the Park, and The Historical Society of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee.

Nancy Preslar

Nancy R. Preslar graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1979. Following graduation Nancy engaged in a general civil practice which included representing injured workers, accident victims and a limited domestic relations practice. She worked for several years as a staff attorney for the local legal aid society with her primary area of practice being Elder Law. She also worked as a law clerk for a judge on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals.

In 1989 Nancy and her family moved to Chattanooga. For the past twenty years Nancy has helped hundreds of people work their way through the Social Security Disability system. Her work is more than a job to her. She believes it is a privilege to have the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful people and to be able to use her experience and knowledge to help them receive the insurance benefits they deserve.

Nancy is a member of the Chattanooga Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, and a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claims representatives. She has spoken on and taught about disability benefits before many community organizations as well before professional associations. In addition to her work she is active in her church and spends time every summer helping lead mission trips everywhere from New Orleans to Jamaica. She is a board member of a local Christian AIDS ministry and has volunteered with several other non-profit organizations over the years.

If you asked Nancy the best way to describe her life and attitude about the journey so far, she would respond that she is blessed and that she believes she has been "Blessed to be a blessing." Her goal is to try to remember to practice this idea in her work as well as her personal life.

In 2014 Nancy decided to join her husband in retirement. She is enjoying getting to spend more time with her grandchildren, gardening, doing some mission work and traveling. She encourages her clients to call her law partners, Nora McCarthy and Peter Murphy, for their ongoing disability needs.
