Business Law Centers of Martha Novy-Broderick,Esq.

Firm Overview

Business Law Centers of Martha Novy-Broderick were created to better serve the needs of small and medium size businesses and the self employed of Maine. From 1983-2007,I was a partner in Broderick and Broderick, PA, a small general practice. In 2007, I started these centers to connect Maine citizens to a quick state wide, internet and phone solution to basic legal needs. We have live help available Monday — Saturday. Our office focuses on effective solutions and advice for Maine citizens.

We have successfully served clients from Presque Isle/Fort Kent to Brunswick as we make good use of today's technologies to serve our clients. My background as a commercial lawyer and Bankruptcy specialist gives me tools to solve difficult estate, trust and business matters. I also encourage proper estate planning and business planning to avoid unnecessary legal issues that can develop. We can accommodate one time services and we can establish long term counsel arrangements so clients can rely on us without unexpected expenses.

We also offer the more traditional office visits for those that need such help. Our firm currently represents dozens of small and medium size businesses, individuals, families, credit unions, savings banks and people with special trust and estate needs. Our probate department and family law services are designed to meet your personal needs. We offer quick and reasonably priced flat rate and unbundled services. Our office accepts credit cards, checks and cash.

Example cases

• Recently obtained a 5019c3 designation for House in the Woods, Inc. a non-profit for grieving military families.
• Created a tri-level trust for a family business transfer.
• Closed an estate where the family non-profit business was transferred to family members.
• I recently created a LLC tied to a corporation to develop real estate in a historic building.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I have enjoyed working for over 25 years with self employed individuals, small and medium credit unions and businesses. The basic legal needs of this group led me to specialize in contracts, collections, bankruptcy rights of creditors, estate and trusts, and guardianships.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I strongly believe that legal education should be taught in high school and in college. Everyone should take time to learn enough about the laws they live under so they can make good legal decisions just like they learn to make good health decisions.

One reason I teach at the college level is to make sure new business managers have some preventative legal education under their belts.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Reviewing documents is an important part of our services. We believe the internet is designed to connect people to the help they need and can afford. We are here to help.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

In many areas, self representation is practical. However, this has to be a case by case review as some areas of law are too technical for a lay person who does not properly study and prepare for court. Much like you can treat yourself for health, you can also take care of your legal issues with some help. That is why we offer unbundled representation.

Martha Novy-Broderick

From 1983-2007, I was a general partner in Broderick and Broderick, P.A. a general practice with a focus on commercial law. I am also an instructor of Business Law at the University of Maine Business School since 1996.

Teaching at the University of Maine Business School reminds me that most people rely heavily on media for information about law. This reliance can lead to terrible mistakes in one's personal and business lives. Legal education of students makes me better at explaining laws in real situations.

I love to personally email and/or talk to all my clients. Many of my current clients have been long term. Serving people personally and efficiently has met many clients' needs well. I believe my legal experience of 27 years gives me the ability to digest the issues and suggest solutions that are cost effective, reasonable and often quick. However, I also believe in good referrals if the client needs specialized care.

Personal interests:

I love to hike, camp, sail and swim. While I do all these fun things, I often take along my camera, my dog and my kids.
