Lisa J. Sowers, P.C.

Former GA Dept. of Labor Hearing Officer Representing Claimants in All Stages of the Unemployment Appeal Process.

Firm Overview

As a former unemployment hearing officer, I presided over approximately 3,000 unemployment appeal hearings before I started my own law practice. Since opening my office, I have successfully represented claimants at all levels of appeal - from the initial application, up through and including appeals out to the Superior Courts of Georgia (this process is more commonly referred to as "judicial review").

As a result of my "inside experience," I have a unique insight into how the Ga. Dept. of Labor works, and more importantly, how a hearing officer will likely view a client's separation from employment. This gives me the ability to skillfully and effectively counsel a client, not only as to the potential outcome of their case, but also as to how to best position themselves to win their appeal, regardless of what stage of the process they are in.

My primary office is in Johns Creek, Georgia. However, I can and do meet with clients at various satellite offices in the Metro Atlanta area. For potential clients who need representation within the State of Georgia, but who live a long distance away from metro Atlanta (or perhaps out-of-state), I offer telephone consultations by appointment.

While "drop-in" office appointments fall during regular business hours, I am known to do telephone consultations at all hours, including evenings, weekends, and in some cases, during the holidays.

I am a solo practitioner, so 99% of the time you contact my office, you reach me, and deal with me throughout the duration of your case. On the rare occasion when you reach my voice mail, I am highly responsive, and endeavor to return all phone calls and emails within a 24 hour time period.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

By practicing in the areas I'm most passionate about. It's that simple, though my cases are quite complex.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

I believe in knowing how to view a case from all angles. I was an unemployment law judge before I began representing claimants at unemployment appeals. Now, when a client consults with me about an unemployment appeal, I approach the consultation like a hearing officer approaches an unemployment hearing. At the end of the consultation, I make my "ruling." Then, I tell a client what their probability of success on appeal will be, and how to best position themselves for the outcome they desire.

The same holds true for my family law cases. I trained and served as a guardian ad litem before I represented clients in child custody disputes. Knowing what factors are most important to the courts, and making recommendations as to what parent is best suited for custody enables me to effectively counsel clients involved in custody disputes as to how to achieve the best possible outcome for their individual situation.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

That I am both accessible and responsive to my clients. When you call my office, you deal with me directly (as opposed to support staff) 95% of the time.
