Firm Overview

Steven Ballard represents individuals in divorce and family law and criminal defense cases in the Greater Boston area. He regularly appears in the probate and family courts of Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Worcester Counties, and also in Plymouth, Essex and Hampshire Counties. He has developed substantial expertise in the area of divorce and family law, particularly in highly contested cases, including especially child custody cases, as well as in the most-often related areas of criminal law and domestic violence.

Steven Ballard also appears in district courts and superior courts throughout the state of Massachusetts, in criminal cases of many kinds, but now primarily in domestic violence and restraining order cases. He has also successfully handled appeals in the state and federal courts.

Steven Ballard, although primarily a family law litigator and trial lawyer, is also trained and qualified, under the requirements of Supreme Judicial Court Rule 1:18, both as a divorce mediator and as a family court conciliator. He has been quoted several times in recent years as a divorce and family law expert, in the Boston Globe, the Boston Business Journal, and elsewhere, and is the publisher and author of the Massachusetts Divorce and Family Law Blog, one of the most frequented and widely read family law blogs in the nation. He is a member of numerous state, national and international professional organizations in the areas of family law, mediation and conflict resolution. He has served as Lawyer for the Day in the Massachusetts probate and family courts of Middlesex, Norfolk and Worcester Counties and has volunteered as court-connected conciliator for the probate and family court of Suffolk County.

Steven Ballard is most experienced and successful in high conflict cases, especially those which involve custody and visitation ("parenting time") disputes, but also in high asset cases and other difficult divorce and family law matters, whether requiring skilled negotiation of agreements outside of court, or instead requiring expert litigation and trial advocacy.

Divorce

Attorney Steven Ballard represents individuals in divorce and family law cases on a regular basis in the Greater Boston Area, in the courts of Middlesex, Norfolk and Worcester Counties. He also takes cases in Suffolk, Essex, and Plymouth Counties, and occasionally in Hampshire, Hampden, and Franklin Counties.

Most family law issues are satisfactorily resolved without the need for trial and, in many cases, even without the need for any significant court involvement. Attorney Steven Ballard encourages parties with family law issues to consider first trying to resolve their conflicts through the use of other means, when feasible, including direct party-to-party negotiations or mediation, and encourages prospective clients to seek family counseling. He is eager to help his clients find the best, easiest, and most harmonious long-term solutions to their particular problems.

Attorney Steven Ballard strives to reduce the areas of conflict and finds that the most usual results for his clients are the most rewarding of outcomes: agreements that preclude the need for lengthy, costly litigation. Attorney Steven Ballard happily accepts clients who are successfully working toward a resolution to their problems through the use of mediation, collaborative law, or other means, and need to retain him for the limited purposes of negotiating a relatively few minor issues, or simply reviewing their agreements and helping to secure the court's acceptance of their agreements.

Attorney Steven Ballard would rather help more clients to resolve their cases than work continuously with fewer clients who are locked in never-ending battles. He has the determination, wisdom, and moral fortitude to search for creative ways to end senseless acrimony and reduce conflict between parties.

If necessary, however, Attorney Ballard does not shy away from going to court, and can put up the most aggressive of fights if that is what is called for. He is accustomed to leaving court with a better outcome for his clients than that which they have anticipated. Attorney Ballard is hard on himself and always endeavors to be better prepared than his opponent.

Steven Ballard

Attorney Steven Ballard is an experienced Massachusetts litigator practicing divorce and family law and criminal defense, and he is an especially successful trial lawyer in child custody and other high-conflict cases. He boasts a rare set of attributes, combining the broad real-life experience and street-smarts typical of the best trial lawyers together with academic credentials that match or surpass those of top lawyers in blue-chip law firms.

Steven Ballard works hard to achieve the best outcomes for his clients by strategic planning, skilled negotiations, and when necessary, aggressive court representation at hearings and at trial. He represents individuals in divorce and family law cases on a regular basis in the Greater Boston Area, in the courts of Middlesex, Norfolk and Worcester Counties. He also takes cases in Suffolk, Essex, Plymouth, Hampshire, Hampden, Barnstable and Franklin Counties.

As a family lawyer, Steven Ballard draws on several years of direct experience with children and adolescents, having taught primary school, secondary school and university students both in the United States and abroad, in his previous career as a pianist, music scholar and teacher. He is also the sole custodial parent of his only child after divorce. He is thus uniquely able to understand and handle custody and visitation matters and other issues involving children.

He understands firsthand the problems and challenges of single and divorced parenthood, and many of the typical problems of both men and women as they face divorce and other family law problems. He is eager to help his clients find the best, easiest, and most harmonious long-term solutions to their problems.

Steven Ballard grew up in the Atlanta area, and then attended college at Columbia College, Columbia University in the City of New York, where he graduated with a Bachelor's in history-sociology.

He thereafter returned to his home state to attend law school, and received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1992. While in law school, he was a member of the Criminal Defense Clinic and received a coveted fellowship from the Public Interest Law Initiative of Chicago.

Steven Ballard has devoted much energy to serving the public interest. He has acted pro bono on behalf of Massachusetts family law litigants through legal aid agencies in Middlesex and Worcester Counties and has served as Lawyer for the Day for the Middlesex County, Norfolk County and Worcester County Divisions of the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court. He has fulfilled the training requirements under Supreme Judicial Court Rule 1:18 as a divorce mediator and as a court-connected conciliator, and has volunteered as a court-connected conciliator in the Suffolk County Probate and Family Court. He has also acted as a judge in years past in several statewide high school Mock Trial competitions sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association.

Attorney Steven Ballard now takes select private criminal defense cases and related civil cases in district and superior courts, particularly when most convenient and practical for clients with related family law matters - including cases involving allegations of domestic violence, restraining orders, and sex abuse allegations.

Steven Ballard also handles appeals in the Massachusetts appellate courts for family law litigants in appropriate circumstances, and has managed to achieve victories for clients on several occasions right at the beginning of the appeals process, by reaching satisfactory agreement out of court before full-blown appeals proved necessary.
