Lauren Wood

Lauren Wood is a partner at the Law Offices of Schurmer and Wood. She is a civil litigation attorney specializing in all types of plaintiffs' personal injury and wrongful death matters. Ms. Wood has both trial and arbitration experience, as well as extensive experience settling cases through mediation and other methods of alternative dispute resolution. Her specialties include truck, automobile, motorcycle and bicycle accidents, wrongful death, insurance bad faith, premises liability, and construction accidents. Ms. Wood has negotiated numerous six and seven figure settlements for her clients.

Ms. Wood is an active member of the State Bar of California and is licensed to practice law in California state courts as well as the United States District Court, Central District of California.

Ms. Wood is actively involved in many local and statewide attorney organizations. Ms. Wood currently serves on the State Bar's California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA) Board of Directors and will retain her seat on the board until 2018. She is the Secretary of the Ventura County Barristers and is a board member as well. In addition to board memberships, Ms. Wood is also a member of numerous professional organizations, such as the Ventura County Bar Association, the Santa Barbara County Bar Association, the Santa Barbara County Barristers, Santa Barbara Young Professionals, Santa Barbara Women Lawyers, Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA), American Association for Justice (AAJ) and both the Ventura and Santa Barbara County chapters of the American Inns of Court.

Lauren Wood is a Board of Director of Los Angles Trial Lawyers Charities (LATLC). She serves as a co-chair on both the Golf Committee and the Website Committee and is a committee member of the Casino Night Committee as well as the Public Relations and Social Media Committee. LATLC is an entirely volunteer run 501c3 nonprofit organization whose officers and directors donate their time and resources to help make a positive difference in the quality of life for people within the greater Los Angeles Area, focusing on issues related to education, children, battered women, persons with disabilities, and the homeless. Ms. Wood is also an honorary board member of the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Charities (LATLC) as a result of her participation and her charitable contributions.

In addition to her success both in and out of the courtroom, Lauren Wood has received numerous professional accolades. Ms. Wood has also been named a Southern California Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2016 and 2017--two consecutive years in a row. Ms. Wood was also nominated by the Santa Barbara Young Professionals for the 2015 Santa Barbara Young Professional of the Year, an award that recognizes professional achievements as well as community involvement and volunteer work.

Prior to practicing at Schurmer & Wood, Ms. Wood worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity office in San Francisco. While in law school, Ms. Wood also clerked at Cooley Manion Jones Hake Kurowski, a former San Francisco toxic tort firm that specialized in asbestos defense. Ms. Wood began her personal injury career when she interned for plaintiff's personal injury litigation firm, Rahman Law, which specializes in automobile accidents, bicycle accidents, pedestrian accidents and dog bites.

Lauren Wood received her law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco, California. While in law school, Ms. Wood also studied at the Universit Paris Ouest Nanterre La Dfense in Paris, France.

Ms. Wood received her undergraduate degree from the University of California Santa Barbara and earned her Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science and a minor in Global Peace and Security.

Earl Schurmer

Earl Schurmer is the managing partner of Schurmer & Wood and has over twenty-five years of litigation experience. Mr. Schurmer is admitted to practice law in all of the State and Federal Courts in California.

Mr. Schurmer is a member of several professional organizations, including the Consumer Attorneys of California, Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, American Trial Lawyers Association and the Ventura and Santa Barbara County Bar Associations. He is also a past participant and member of the Santa Barbara and Ventura Inns of Court. He has and continues to act as Judge Pro Tem at the Ventura and Santa Barbara Superior Courts as a settlement officer and has acted as an arbitrator in numerous cases throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

Mr. Schurmer started his plaintiff's-side personal injury career in 1993 when he was hired as an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Schurmer & Wood. His extensive experience in handling the defense side of cases proved to be a valuable asset in handling all types of plaintiff cases. Since that time, Mr. Schurmer has handled virtually all types of personal injury and wrongful death actions from the initial client meeting to jury verdict with a vast number of seven figure settlements, arbitration awards and jury verdicts.

Mr. Schurmer also has extensive experience in medical malpractice cases and has taken a particular interest in the medical aspect of all different matters. He has participated in numerous medical educational opportunities including a course taught by UCLA medical school instructors with extensive classroom training followed by hands on cadaver examinations and dissections.

Prior to Schurmer & Wood, Mr. Schurmer began his professional career as an associate attorney for Gilbert, Kelly, Crowley and Jennett. Gilbert Kelly is an insurance defense firm in Los Angeles that specializes in defending many types of personal injury and wrongful death actions. While at Gilbert Kelly he took and defended hundreds of depositions including plaintiffs, defendants, law enforcement personnel and all manner of medical, scientific and technical experts. Mr. Schurmer handled and defended cases from receipt of the initial claims file through arbitration and trial and had substantial dealings with insurance company managers and adjusters relating to value determinations and resolution of claims.

Mr. Schurmer attended the University of Southern California from 1982-1986 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. Mr. Schurmer received his Juris Doctorate in 1991 from Southwestern School of Law in Los Angeles.

Mr. Schurmer is a founder and current board member of Hands4Others, a non-profit organization with a goal to provide clean and sustainable drinking water to those in need throughout the world. Mr. Schurmer is also an honorary board member of the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers' Charities as a result of his participation and charitable contributions.

Mr. Schurmer currently resides in Santa Barbara with his wife Rhonda and his three children.
