History:

The Law of offices Mayer & Newton actually used to be two separate law firms.

Richard Mayer began his practice of law in 1977 as a tax attorney. After practicing tax law for 8 years, Richard Mayer decided that his skills were best suited to practice bankruptcy law. Richard Mayer filed his first chapter 13 and chapter 7 bankruptcy in January 1986. Within 6 months Richard Mayer was the largest filer of Chapter 13 bankruptcies in the Eastern District of Tennessee, Northern division. In 1993 Richard Mayer became a certified specialist in consumer bankruptcy law. Richard Mayer was the first certified consumer bankruptcy specialist in the Knoxville area. Also in 1993, Richard Mayer became one of the charter members of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and has remained a loyal member since its founding. Prior to merging with attorney John Newton to form Mayer and Newton; Richard Mayer had been attorney of record for approximately 25,000 bankruptcies.

Initially Mr. Newton practiced law with the Law Firm of McCampbell and Young. In 1984 he became a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Panel Trustee for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and still currently holds that position. In addition, Mr. Newton began representing consumer debtors as well as small businesses in East Tennessee in filing Chapter 7, 11, and 13 cases. In 1990, Mr. Newton started practicing with the Law firm of Shanks and Blackstock from 1985 to 1990. In 1990 he became a partner in the Law Firm of McGhee & Newton in west Knoxville. Mr. Newton has handled thousands of consumer bankruptcies cases as well as over 120 Chapter 11 business reorganization cases in Knoxville.

In July of 2006, Richard Mayer and John Newton sat down and decided it would be in their, as well as their clients’ best interest for them to merge. Now with over 50 years of combined experience they are prepared to tackle even the most complex bankruptcy issues. With Richard’s vast experience and John’s unique trustee perspective, they provide their clients with a more comprehensive view of their bankruptcy options.

Richard Mayer

Richard M. Mayer is a partner of the Law Offices of Mayer & Newton.

Mr. Mayer graduated with a B.A. from Vanderbilt in 1973.

He received his juris doctorate degreee from Creighton University in 1976.

Finally, he received a LLM in taxation from New York University in 1977.

He was admitted to the bar to practice for all Courts in the State of Tennessee, the Federal District Court, The United States Bankruptcy Court, United States Tax Court and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

He is board certified by the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification. He is also a certified consumer bankruptcy specialist by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization.

He is a charter member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. He has been recognized by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the Volunteer Legal Assistance Program.

He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, The Tennessee Bar Association and the Knoxville Bar Association. He has been practicing exclusively in the bankruptcy area since 1986 and has participated in the preparation of over 20,000 bankruptcy cases.

Mr. Mayer's personal interests include baseball, golfing and spending time with his family.

John Newton

John P. Newton is a partner at the Law Offices of Mayer & Newton, where his areas of practice include business bankruptcy and consumer bankruptcy law. Mr. Newton specializes in small business cases
Licensed in Tennessee since 1984, Mr. Newton has filed thousands of consumer bankruptcy cases and has been a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Panel Trustee for the Eastern District of Tennessee since 1985. Mr. Newton is admitted to the Federal Court and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. Newton earned his B.S. degree in Finance, and his M.B.A. degreee in Finance, and his law degree from teh University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Mr. Newton is certified by the American Board of certification and teh Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization as a Consumer Bankruptcy Specialist. He has lectured to various professional groups on collections and bankruptcy issues.

Originally from the state of Michigan, Mr Newton is a former All-American and Letterman as a swimmer with teh University of Tennessee. He swam as a member of The UT 1978 National Championship team. Mr. Newton help set several American and World records in National and international swim competitions for the University of Tennessee and the United States, including the 1979 Pan Am Games. After his collegiate career, Mr. Newton continued to be involved in local swimming while coaching at the Webb School, Sevier County High School and Cherokee Country Club Team, as well as a student assistant for the UT Swim Team.

Mr. Newton is a member of the Gettysvue Country Club and enjoys spending time with his family.

Casey Caldwell

Casey L. Caldwell is an associate with the Law Offices of Mayer & Newton in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mr. Caldwell graduated from Tennessee Temple University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, having double majored in history and political science.

In 2005, Mr. Caldwell received his Juris Doctorate from Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Mr. Caldwell was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 2005 and was admitted to practice in the United States District Court for Eastern District of Tennessee in 2006.

In his free time, Mr. Caldwell enjoys spending time with his daughter.

Patrick Woodside

Patrick C. Woodside, Jr. is an associate with the Law Offices of Mayer and Newton.

Mr. Woodside earned his B.S. from Tennessee Tech University in 2002 and his J.D. from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a concentration in Business Transactions in 2006.

Mr. Woodside was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 2006. Mr. Woodside is admitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee and the Middle District of Tennessee. Mr. Woodside concentrates his practice exclusively in the field of bankruptcy to better serve his clients.

Mr. Woodside enjoys reading, watching football and spending time with his family.
