How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

All of the attorney's at the Law Offices of James A. Rivera have a background in public defense work, prior to going into private practice. Criminal law was the originial focus of the firm, but as so many of our client required help with immigration as a result of criminal cases, we decided to include immigration into our practice to further assist our clients.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others

As stated before all of our attorneys have experience in the public defender's office. We have a diverse group of talent, and legal education from some of the top law schools in the country.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Seth Peritz

Seth Peritz is a graduate of William & Mary Law School and a member of the Virginia State Bar. At the Law Offices of James A. Rivera, Seth handles a full case load of misdemeanor, felony and appellate cases in the Northern Virginia and Richmond areas.

Prior to joining the Law Offices of James A. Rivera, Seth worked as a legal fellow for the Loudoun County Public Defender's Office, handling dozens of misdemeanor cases. Seth also assisted in felony cases including contractor fraud, murder, and assault and battery of a law enforcement officer.

While attending William and Mary he interned as a prosecutor in the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office in Illinois for two summers prosecuting various criminal cases. He also interned at the Richmond Federal Public Defender's Office for one semester.

James Rivera

As a long time resident of the area, James Rivera opened the Law Office of James A. Rivera, PLLC to serve local individuals who may not otherwise be able to hire an attorney. James has defended hundreds of criminal and traffic cases in Loudoun County, Fairfax County, Prince William County and Arlington County. He has also represented individuals in various criminal matters in the Richmond, Virginia area. He represents those who are charged with anything from a Class 1 felony to a Class 4 misdemeanor. James also has experience with representing clients before Federal Immigration Courts in Arlington, Baltimore, York, Pennsylvania and other jurisdictions. He has successfully obtained immigration bonds for clients, reopened deportation orders for many clients and hashelped individuals achieve some form of legal status through asylum hearings and cancellation of removal hearings.

Mr. Rivera earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland. While attending law school, Mr. Rivera was an active member of the Civil Advocacy Clinic where he represented low-income individuals and was able to sharpen his advocacy skills.

James is happily married and has a wonderful, supportive wife and children. Hi Camille!
