Karen S. Yochim

Before beginning law school, Karen Yochim's academic and employment endeavors provided the perfect foundation for her eventual career as a Family Law and Estate Planning & Administration Attorney. Karen's undergraduate degree, which combined Economics, with a concentration in psychology, was attained in 1997 from Furman University. Following graduation, Karen worked for several years as a branch manager for one of the nation's largest financial institutions.

Wanting a more fulfilling career which focused on serving the needs of the family unit, Karen returned to school and received her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Florida Frederick G. Levin College of Law in 2003. Upon being admitted to the Florida Bar in 2003, Karen accepted a position as an associate attorney with a locally recognized law firm, where she continued to practice for the next 6+ years. In 2009, she left this firm, to establish a law firm where she was a partner.

In recognition of her professional achievements, Alba & Dubose subsequently invited Karen to join their legal team. Since joining the firm, Karen's skilled legal analysis and ability to handle highly complex matters, coupled with her compassionate approach, has led to her establishment as a valuable asset to both the firm, as well as members of the Gainesville community. Consequently, when Mark transitioned into a role as 'of counsel' attorney, Karen was offered the opportunity to become partner, and in 2014, the firm became the Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A.

Karen's career has focused primarily on the area of Family Law, however, she also represents clients in estate planning and administration, guardianship and incapacity proceedings, as well as probate litigation matters. She is one of a very few attorneys in Gainesville trained in Collaborative Divorce through the Collaborative Divorce Institute. In addition to handling the necessary aspects of divorce, Karen views her role as legal counsel as an opportunity to facilitate parental understanding of children's needs as a priority during the process.

Her ability to provide a full range of family law services, including expert referrals to help families gain important skills, such as increased post-divorce parental communication to assist children in coping with transitional issues, is a benefit that sets Karen apart from other attorneys. Further, in addition to her own training and experience, Karen has acted as an instructor for Continuing Legal Education seminars instructing other attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, financial planners and accountants in Estate Planning for the Disabled.

When not advocating for her clients, Karen spends time with her family. She enjoys boating, reading, and being outdoors. In addition, Karen remains highly involved in both the local community, as well as the legal community in general. She is a committee member to the St. Michael's Day School Activities Committee, and is the Fundraising Chair for the St. Michael's Day School Board of Directors. She has also served as advocate and board member to Gerald T. Bennett Inn of Court, the largest and fastest growing legal mentoring organization, founded upon "improving skills, professionalism, ethics of the bench and bar through the assessment of cutting edge legal trends, innovations & technology."

Gilbert J. Alba

Gil Alba was born and raised in Central Florida and has subscribed to a hard-work ethic his entire life. While pursuing his undergraduate degree at the University of Central Florida (UCF), he worked as a legal assistant for one of Florida's largest and oldest Intellectual Property law firms. Despite his status as both a full-time student and full-time employee, Gil's dedication and perseverance enabled him to graduate with honors in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

After graduating from UCF, Gil moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida (UF) Frederic G. Levin College of Law where his superior academic performance gained him the Atwood Dunwoody Scholarship. Although continuing to work part-time, Gil achieved honors and high honors in law school, and in 2003 graduated in the top third of his class.

Upon admittance to the Florida Bar in 2004, Gil remained in Gainesville and was hired to lead the personal injury department of a locally recognized law firm. His hard work and demonstrated professionalism resulted in Gil attaining partnership status at his prior firm after only 5 years. The knowledge and experience gained in his initial years of practice enabled Gil in to establish his own partnership with J. Mark Dubose, Jr. in forming the Law Office of Alba & Dubose P.A.

Shortly thereafter, Karen S. Yochim joined Alba & Dubose, and quickly became a valuable asset to the firm. In recognition of Karen's skill and expertise, and upon Mark's role transition into 'of counsel' attorney, Gil subsequently invited Attorney Yochim to become a firm partner, and in 2014 the firm became the Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A.

Over the past decade, Gil has maintained a practice area focus on specific types of accidents, injuries, and death, caused by the negligence of another. A full listing of practice areas is provided below. In addition Gil is fluent in Spanish, and proud of his Latino heritage, allowing him to be uniquely suited to service Spanish-speaking members of our community.

Gil resides in Gainesville, along with his wife and two children. When he is not working, Gil enjoys spending valuable time with his family doing a variety of activities, while also remaining actively involved in his community. He is an avid Gator sports fan, and has been a Gator booster, as well as member of the UF and UCF Alumni Associations.

J. Mark Dubose Jr.

J. Mark Dubose Jr. has dedicated himself to the characteristics of leadership, persistence, and professionalism. His strive for excellence began more than 30 years ago during his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he was the president of both the Student Government, as well as his fraternity. Through such governance, Mark gained valuable experience in the art of effective negotiation, as well as the ability to distinguish between matters which are best handled with a less adversarial or alternative means of dispute resolution, versus those that require a more direct and aggressive approach.

Upon attaining his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1986, Mark was accepted into St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. In 1989, Mark received his Juris Doctor and was admitted to practice law in Texas.

Immediately after law school, Mark became the first associate attorney at the law firm of Martin, Strolle, Oyervides & Saindon, P.C., in San Antonio, Texas. The firm had both a plaintiff personal injury practice, as well as a trucking accident defense practice. As the only associate, Mark was involved in almost every case. This allowed Mark to not only learn how to prosecute a personal injury claim, but also the common defenses used against trucking accident claims. The firm handled high profile, high-value wrongful death cases, as well as serious injury claims. Mark routinely turns cases other attorneys have given up on into valuable cases.

After several years with the firm, Mark began his solo career representing individuals in both personal injury claims, as well as family law matters. During his 16 years as a solo practitioner Mark successfully represented individuals against insurance companies such as State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, USAA, Humana, PacifiCare, and Blue Cross & Blue Shield, as well as corporate giants such as Dow Chemical, Nationsbank, and Rackspace.

During this time, Mark married his wife Candice, who was a registered nurse. While working and raising a family, Candice returned to her education and attended medical school. Following her graduation from medical school, Candice (now Dr. Dubose) accepted a residency position in orthopedic surgery at the University of Florida in Gainesville where she then went on to a fellowship program in orthopedic trauma surgery.

As former founding partner, Mark has made tremendous contributions to the firm's growth. Mark currently provides legal services in an 'of counsel' capacity, and continues to be a valued component of the Law Office of Alba & Yochim P.A.

Mark is the past president, and past treasurer, of Gainesville Area Rowing, a local crew rowing team. His work and dedication to the team not only helps the youth rowing team members, but also the adult rowing program serving the area.

Upon moving to Florida, Mark learned a bit about his family history from his father. It turns out Mark's great-great-great grandfather, Captain John Dubose, was the first lighthouse keeper of the Cape Florida Lighthouse on Key Biscayne, Florida. After serving for over a decade, in 1835 Captain Dubose and his family moved to Gonzales, Texas, Mark's home town. It was both a surprise and a pleasure for Mark to learn he had roots in the great state of Florida.
