Law Offices of Kelly Y. Reiter

Firm Overview

Prior to opening my own firm in September of 2010, I worked for ten years as an attorney for the Family and Children's Law Center. My firm is exclusively devoted to the practice of family law, and related matters, in Marin, San Francisco, and the Bay Area. My particular specialty and focus is representing children and families in all issues involving children, including but not limited to adoption (adult, independent, agency, and step-parent), family law, education, emancipation, guardianship, and juvenile dependency. My goal is to resolve your case with a favorable outcome while maintaining the sensitivity and attention necessary to ensure that the best interests and needs of the child remain paramount.

I have represented over 600 children and families in the legal arena. While I have been involved in hundreds of trials, my focus and goal is to help families avoid the litigation process and maintain control over family decisions by working toward quick, amicable resolution whenever possible. This approach minimizes legal fees and maximizes the control of clients to make decisions regarding what is best for their family.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I chose working with families and children to reduce the trauma associated with litigation while remaining focused on the best interest of the child. I strive to empower clients to remain in control of the decision making process by educating them on the laws affecting their case as well as the options for quick resolution when possible.

Recognizing how incredibly important it is to support the family as it changes from one intact unit to two separate co-existing units in the context of family law, I handle cases with the utmost care and attention, offering support and guidance to families throughout the process. This is of even more importance in the area of special education, as the issues are quite complex and can be overwhelming.

It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of assisting families through a legal process that is riddled with emotion and stress and supporting their ability to retain control over the decisions regarding the most precious people in their lives- their children.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I am in favor of my clients educating themselves on the legal issues in their cases. It helps to focus the meetings, maximizing time while minimizing fees. Knowing what to expect and being prepared can help ease the stress and uncertainty while navigating through often complex legal processes.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am happy and encourage clients to be involved in their case. I will provide both direct representation as well as consultation in any case, including review of client-prepared documents.

California law dictates that consideration of the best interest of the child is of utmost importance. It is my goal to make sure clients have all the necessary information to make their agreement and documents in compliance with the requirements of California Court mandates.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I frequently provide coaching and guidance if the client is willing and able to represent themselves. Having worked with unrepresented litigants for years, I am experienced in offering guidance, role-playing and consultation needed for favorable resolution through self-representation while keeping fees to a minimum.

Kelly Y. Reiter

I previously worked for Family & Children's Law Center in Marin County, specializing in representing children embroiled in legal actions regarding their health and welfare. Additionally, I provided legal assistance to low and middle income clients in all areas of family law. Family and Children's Law Center sees over a thousand clients a year, giving counsel an opportunity to work with hundreds of families and work toward swift resolutions with minimal cost and maximum efficiency.

Representing and working with clients through Family & Children's Law Center provided an opportunity to deal with every type of family law issue, often with financial constraints and emotional trauma. The skills learned in this environment provided a strong foundation to handle complex issues while helping clients to balance emotional issues while navigating through the legal process.

My years of education and experience in the field of family law allow me to have the foresight, expertise, and care necessary to ensure that unique and sometimes complex issues are given proper consideration and that you and your child's rights are protected throughout any legal proceedings.

Having worked with hundreds of families and seeing firsthand the emotional toll of being embroiled in the legal system, I am very aware of the need to address the emotional as well as legal issues for a better outcome for the family. Having the ability to understand and empathize with the emotional underpinnings of a case lead to better outcomes for the families. Balancing the legal issues with the emotional is a skill I have acquired through representation of children and has led to success in advocating for families and children both in the courtroom and out.

After years of family law practice, my reputation is one of building reliable relationships with clients based on integrity, trust and open communication. I am recognized as providing compassionate counsel to all involved, while ensuring the focus remains child directed. More importantly, my ability to listen, understand and connect with clients who are working through the various difficult aspects of transition and family law is what matters most. I am also extremely mindful of the cost associated with legal actions.

Personal interests:

As an involved parent, I enjoy spending much of my free time with my family. I also love to read and hike. I have established close relationships with many of the young people I have represented, and often am attending celebrations, such as graduations, births, baptisms, weddings, etc.
