Firm Overview

The Law Offices of Jeanne O'Brien is one of the top estate planning and estate administration law firms in the area. I have been in practice for over 24 years in Santa Barbara, Monterey, San Francisco, and on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The firm's emphasis is on estate planning and administration of estates and trusts, elder law, probate, wills, trusts, special needs trusts, powers of attorney, and related real estate and business transactions. We work for our clients to share our knowledge and experience to counsel them through major financial and lifestyle transitions and develop an overall plan for the future. We strive to give each client professional and personal legal services to help them achieve peace of mind and create legacies. Over the years we are proud to have become the trusted family advisor to many.

On several occasions I have been successful in amending irrevocable trusts. I also have helped several clients preserve or conserve property for the benefit of the public.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Estate planning and administration is an area of law where I can truly help people create a legacy for their families or their community, and bring them peace of mind. I enjoy that.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients who educate themselves about their legal issues are easier to work with. I consider them 'good clients.'

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am happy to help clients by reviewing their documents.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Often people cannot afford legal representation so I am willing to help them through referrals and to give advice. Unfortunately such help is usually limited.

Jeanne L. O'Brien

I was a Per Diem Judge in the District and Family Court of the Third Circuit, State of Hawaii, and have also been a professor of law. Since 1986 I have been in private practice as a solo practitioner in Monterey and Santa Barbara California, Kapaau, North Kohala, and Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as well as having worked with Melvin Belli Sr. in San Francisco, and several smaller firms in Hawaii, and most recently in Thousand Oaks, CA.

One of my first jobs was as a director for a council on aging where I discovered that I like working with seniors. After that I held a number of other real world jobs, before going to law school, which gave me a good perspective and wealth of experience. As an attorney since 1986, I have been fortunate to have worked with some great attorneys, and in many various types of law and with some great clients. As a judge, my experience grew exponentially.

Most people find me easy to work with, personable, professional, and willing to go the extra mile. My experience as a law professor and judge helps me evaluate, explain, and advise my clients about legal issues so they can understand their options and meet their goals.

Personal interests:

I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, photography, and films. I am interested in politics and world affairs.
