Firm Overview

My firm is unwaveringly focused on providing my clients with aggressive and knowledgeable criminal defense when it is needed most. I have seen how a criminal conviction can wreck a once bright future and I am fully prepared to go the distance necessary to help my clients achieve the outcome that they deserve. Should you choose to work with me, you will be able to be confident knowing that I will utilize my vast resources and experience to help you defend your freedom.

My firm was established in 1990 when I broke off from my previous career to step out on my own. Since then, it has grown to include two separate offices in San Diego County and North County.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I chose criminal law because I have seen how unfair it can be to the accused. I have witnessed how wrongful accusations and criminal charges can be slapped on a defendant that does not deserve such steep charges or to be charged at all. I therefore wanted the ability to provide my client with dynamic representation to help them protect their legal rights when it is needed most.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I strongly encourage all clients who work with me to continually work at educating themselves. Criminal law is complex and it is not expected for them to become experts. Having a shallow understanding of the law, however, is better than having none and will only prove to be beneficial to them in the long run.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review all documents that I view to be relevant to my case. This includes those prepared by my clients should they be helpful to me in preparing and building their case.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I will discuss all available options with a client in an initial case evaluation and will help them come to a decision on which will be the best for them.

James N. Dicks

I have had very unique and blended experiences that allow for me to give my clients the edge that they need when working through their case. I served first at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office and then moved to the San Diego County Public Defender's Office. There, I learned excellent skills in litigation that I use to this day to help protect the legal rights of my clients against complex charges. Beyond this legal experience, I have also spent time working as a law enforcement officer which gives me a well-rounded view of the law that not everyone can boast of.

My experience as a law enforcement officer and a narcotics investigator truly put me on the other side of the law. It not only instilled in me a sense of meticulousness, but also helped me gain a very well-rounded understanding of the legal process. I know the law inside and out and am also able to understand the mindset of prosecutors - enabling me to continually work at staying one step ahead of them.

I am hard-hitting and aggressive. I know that there is not any time to waste and I therefore do not waste a moment. Should you work with me, you can be confident knowing that I will do everything that I can to help you regardless of how difficult it might be. I have devoted myself to this profession and I therefore do everything that I can to help my clients - giving an extensive and thorough understanding of the law, as well as a passionate approach that they can rely on.
