Fighting to Keep Families Together

The United States has favorable policies of allowing families to remain together on U.S. soil when a member of the family is a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Nonetheless, U.S. immigration laws are highly stringent. When certain requirements are not met, families can be torn apart as one or more members are forced to either stay in or return to their native land.

Our attorneys fight hard keep families intact. We understand how the system works and can develop key strategies to help non-citizens remain lawfully in the U.S. We represent and advise individuals and families in the following areas of immigration:

Family-Based Immigration

Immediate relatives, including parents, spouses, fiancs, and children, and other close family members of U.S. citizens are generally able to immigrate to the United States through sponsorship. Yet even under these circumstances, the process for entering the country isn't necessarily easy. We can help obtain permanent resident status (commonly known as a green card) for family members, whether they are currently in the U.S. or abroad.

Because of our extensive knowledge of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services requirements and procedures, we can advise you on the fastest route to getting your loved one in the country legally and prevent you from making mistakes that can lengthen the process.

Removal & Deportation Defense

The attorneys of Holevoet & H anna, LLC, are dedicated to preventing the unjust removal of foreign nationals from the U.S., and may be able to help you or your loved one secure legal residency. We will work together with you to develop a strong defense strategy that may include:

Cancellation or Stays of Removal

Adjustment of status through a qualifying family member

Waivers of Inadmissibility

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

Requests for Prosecutorial Discretion
We also advise criminal defense attorneys on the impact of criminal convictions on immigration status and options.

Employment-Based Immigration

Foreign students, professionals and other workers often to come to the U.S. to further their studies and careers and end up wanting to stay permanently. Our immigration attorneys can help put you on the path to permanent residency in the U.S. through employment-based immigration.

We can help with each step of the application process for an employment-based visa. We'll advise you on how to build a resume that spotlights visa criteria and ensure that every government requirement is adequately met and demonstrated. Simultaneously, we can arrange for the immigration of a spouse or child.

If you are already in the U.S. on a temporary visa, we can help strategize the best way to keep your legal status until you qualify for permanent resident status.

We can help you resolve issues surrounding physical placement of your child.
Child Custody. In Wisconsin, "legal custody" means that a parent or legal guardian has the right to make major decisions on behalf of the child. Often there are disputes as to who should have legal custody of a child or children. We will serve as a forceful yet compassionate advocate for you and your child in these matters, helping you to gain custody of your child, modify an custody agreement or enforce an established agreement.
Property Division. Wisconsin is a marital property state, which means that any property a couple acquires during a marriage is generally considered to belong to them equally, although there are some exceptions. In a divorce, disagreements naturally arise as to how to divide the property. We can assist you with any marital property disputes or help create a marital agreement to opt out of the marital property law.

John Holevoet

John grew up on a sheep farm in Illinois. Being a farm kid, he learned the value of hard work early on and those lessons stayed with him as he practices law. After college, John moved to Wisconsin for graduate school at the University of Wisconsin Madison. At the time, he thought he wanted to become a history professor, but life had other things in store for him. After getting his master's degree from UW, John ended up working for an organization that dealt with motorist issues, including impaired driving laws. This inspired him to go to law school so that he could help defend those accused of impaired driving. His focus set him apart; it was rare to find anyone else who wanted to specialize in operating while under the influence (OWI) cases. During school, John also had the opportunity to clerk for the well-known defense firm of Van Wagner & Wood.
After being admitted to the bar, John became an associate attorney at Van Wagner & Wood, where he worked a variety of cases, but focused heavily on his passion of OWI defense. In May 2010, John decided to start his own practice. OWI defense continues to make up the majority of the work he does, although he also handles many other cases, everything from traffic tickets to sexual assaults.
John has the specialized knowledge needed to make him an excellent advocate for clients charges with OWI or any other impaired driving charge. He has attended conferences on impaired driving defense. He is well versed in the administrative suspension process that normally occurs along with the formal criminal or civil charges. He knows the ins and outs of the manuals used to train police officers on the field sobriety tests used to justify their OWI arrests. Attorney Holevoet is also one of a limited number of attorneys in the state that belongs to the National College for DUI Defense and has received training on the Intoximeter EC/IR II, the actual breath test device used by police throughout Wisconsin.
John Holevoet is admitted to practice throughout Wisconsin and in federal court for the Western District of Wisconsin. He is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Dane County Bar Association, the Jefferson County Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Dane County Criminal Defense Attorneys Association, attorney Holevoet is one of fewer than two dozen members of the National College for DUI Defense who practice in Wisconsin. The American Society of Legal Advocates named Attorney Holevoet one of Wisconsin's Top 40 Criminal Defense Lawyers Under 40.

He is also one of just a handful of defense attorneys in the state to have undergone training on an actual Intoximeter EC/IR II, the breath test machine used by police departments throughout Wisconsin.
