Example cases

Client was charged with Taking Motor Vehicle Without Permission in the Second degree. Client was walking down the street with other individuals, who all appeared to be high-school aged, and school was in session. Officer saw the individuals and noted that they were in the parking lot of a mini-mart and there were no cars in the parking lot. The individuals left the store and walked down the street. The officer watched for a few minutes, he then drove around the block. The officer decided the boys were "up to no good", so he stopped the boys; the officer later discovered that the boys had been in a vehicle that had been reported stolen. However, the officer did not know, when he stopped them, that they had been in that vehicle earlier. It was not until after being detained that the incriminating information was developed. The evidence was suppressed and the case was dismissed.

Client was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Less Than 40 Grams. Client was walking in a neighborhood and knocking on doors, when a person would answer the door, the client would ask if they needed help around the yard or house. A resident of the neighborhood called the police because they felt this was unusual behavior. The officer arrived and stopped the client. When the officer stopped the client, he searched him and found the marijuana. Because the office did not have a basis to search the client, the court suppressed the evidence and the case was dismissed.

Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

If it is possible to assist with only part of a case, and the client so chose, I would assist as best I am able.

What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

My clients will always deal directly with me. My clients have the benefit of being able to have direct access to me, as their attorney because I do my best to keep overhead costs low.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

All cases are fact specific and the clients always direct the course their cases take, be it trial or plea bargain. Because of my extensive criminal defense experience, I always explain the various options a person has and will provide guidance as to the benefits or detriments of each.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

Highline Law Group, PLLC is enrolled with the King County Office of Public Defense and the Seattle Municipal Court to provide conflict representation to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

Highline Law Group, PLLC is a small criminal defense firm that focuses on providing the highest quality defense to its clients. My clients will always have the benefit of direct access to me and will be able to contact me anytime of the day or night if necessary.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I always encourage my clients to gain knowledge and understanding of the law. It is vital that they understand the crimes they are charged with and the evidence the state or city will use against them. By having an understanding of the law and criminal justice process, my clients can better assist me in developing their individual representation.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I prepare any court documents and my client would review them before submission to the court. However, I always review any other documents or letters prepared by my clients. It is the client's case and they are in the best position to know what happened during the incident that brought about the current charges. Often times, the client is in possession of a vital piece of information or document that will help in developing their defense.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Criminal prosecution presents serious potential consequences; this is not an avenue you should take without representation. If you cannot afford an attorney the court will appoint one to represent you. I have had experience with clients that wish to represent themselves, and I always advise against it. If, however, after reviewing the case and a client so chose to represent themselves, I would assist, where and when possible.
