Practicing bankruptcy law since 2003. We focus on working class families. If you are a family in need of financial relief, we may be a good fit for you.

Firm Overview

Every year we file for hundreds of families just like yours.

The day you file, creditors have to back off. Period.

Credit cards, medical bills, and other consumer debts are erased.

Almost all your property is protected by exemption statutes.

With the information you need, at the level of detail that will make you comfortable.

Bankruptcy recognizes that everyone deserves a chance to start over. We love what we do because we can change people's lives for the better.

We are a small bankruptcy practice with an office in Lawrence. We focus exclusively on consumer bankruptcies, and most of our clients are middle- and working-class families. They own one or two cars; they may rent, or may have a modest mortgage. And many of them make a living with their hands, often as subcontractors or small business owners. Their kids may be the first generation of their family able to attend college. We also have a number of clients in retirement or on disability who are trying to make it on a fixed income.

Common debts are medical bills, credit cards, payday loans and car notes. We often get clients who are behind on mortgages and need help catching up. Although most of our clients get tax refunds, we also see our share of problems with the IRS and Kansas Department of Revenue. Recently, as the cost of basic healthcare has increased, a significant percentage of our filings are the result of unpaid medical bills -- that result even when the clients have insurance.

We found that the key to success was the personal touch. We make certain an attorney is involved in every aspect of every case, from the original phone call to the final order. This not only results in better casework it also establishes personal relationships that last throughout the case. The better our communication and level of trust, the better results we can obtain for our people. We are privileged to provide a huge benefit for suffering families and we like to see the results of our work.

We are excited about our recent expansion into Central Kansas. The families of Manhattan, Junction City, Emporia and Salina are underserved by bankruptcy attorneys. There are just not enough services to go around. We know there are people with no place to go and no one to turn to. We look forward to bringing the power of bankruptcy relief to those who need it the most. If you believe we can help you, please do not hesitate to call.

Every year we file for hundreds of families just like yours. Congress designed bankruptcy to help people, just like you, get out of debt and get a fresh financial start. Bankruptcy is the first step toward financial freedom.
We are a firm based in Topeka, Kansas. Shannon Garrett grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has been practicing bankruptcy law since 2003. We concentrate on individual and family bankruptcies. Our clients are either working for a paycheck, self-employed contractors, or have small businesses. Our clients are from Northeast Kansas - Fort Riley, Manhattan, Topeka, Ottawa, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Oskaloosa, and Overland Park. We focus mostly on families and individuals because we see the biggest benefit to them when they file for bankruptcy. Most of our folks do not have much in the way of "luxuries." They do not have big stockbroker accounts; they are just regular people who are loaded up with debt. We find that a simple, clean, well-drafted bankruptcy filing will enable a family to keep the property it needs, put money in its pocket, and give it a chance to get financially healthy again. We love what we do.

If you are a family in need of financial relief, we may be a good fit for you. Call us when you are ready.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

We can do an incredible amount of good for our clients.

Most attorneys can only make the best of a bad situation - they can help you get money for an injury or loss, they can help you through a difficult divorce, or they can help you navigate the system if you find yourself on the wrong side of the law.

We do better than that. We can offer a solution to crushing debt. It is a wonderful way to put our skills and energy to work.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others?

Everyone you meet in our office has been broke at one time or another. We know, first hand, what a weak economy can do to the working class. It gives us the understanding and empathy we need to listen to our clients, and to help them understand that bankruptcy is not a sign of defeat - it is a way to relief and hope.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

We understand that this is, first and foremost, about people. Our challenge is put the bankruptcy laws to work for each client, and that takes listening. We keep in mind that we may be the first to hear about a client's troubles - before they tell a spouse, parent, or friend. We treasure that trust, and do our best to earn it as we work through a family's financial situation.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

We believe that the better informed our client is, the better decision they can make. HOWEVER, bankruptcy is extremely technical. There are many ways to lose money and property, and the pitfalls are not apparent to someone who is inexperienced.

Our goal, when we work with people, is to make sure they have enough knowledge to have a productive conversation with a licensed, competent attorney in their jurisdiction. Bankruptcy needs to be done right.

For me, the challenge of taking a financial mess and planning a way out is the most satisfying part of bankruptcy It combines people skills, financial planning, budgeting, and knowledge of many areas of law. You can be a craftsman, working with a morass of paper and figures to create an effective plan and a polished petition. We have great tools to get our clients out of debt.
