The Law Office of John V. Coy

FREE initial consultation with an experienced (15+yrs) Family Law / Divorce Attorney (mediator services also available) Phone: 801-746-0314

Firm Overview

Having practiced family law in Utah since 2001, I have the practical experience needed to provide you the quality representation you want, both in and out of the courtroom. You'll receive a FREE initial consultation over the phone, and generally a FREE 30 minute follow-up consultation at my office, where we'll discuss the facts of your case confidentially, and discuss the best strategy for you.

Having my own practice allows me to provide quality services in a personable way, with proper attention to the special needs, and limitations of each case. My representation style is respectful, direct, and focused on obtaining the best practical results for you (and your minor children (if any)).

I seek to lower conflict, in order to promote appropriate compromises by the opposing party, to get you to a more fair and practical resolution, efficiently. I am able to negotiate most of my cases to appropriate settlement agreements, but I also take cases to trial whenever necessary. I have the experience to know what conflicts to negotiate, what conflicts to mediate, what conflicts to litigate, and what conflicts can be avoided altogether. I am respectful with the court, my client's, and everyone involved in the process, and I receive respect in return.

You can choose full service hourly-rate representation, limited scope flat-rate services, or even just attorney coaching, and document review and advice to help you understand and manage your own case, for those who can't afford more help. You can see my rates posted on online, at:

In cases where you're ready to talk about settlement, I can open negotiations, and/or assist you to select a 3rd party mediator. At mediation, I can help you find solutions and negotiate fair compromises, while protecting you against a bad deal, and unforeseen consequences of problematic terms and agreements.

Alternatively, if both parties request me be your neutral mediator, instead of your attorney, I can help you reach your own solutions either sitting down together, or shuttling offers and negotiations from separate rooms in my office. When you reach your well informed settlement with me, I can then draft your settlement agreement and related orders for a reduced flat fee as part of a mediation package. This may be particularly helpful if you can't afford separate attorney representation to navigate and argue your case in court.

Whether you choose me as your lawyer, or as your mediator, I look forward to the opportunity to be of service. -- John V. Coy, Attorney at Law

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Of course you may seek to educate yourself about Utah family law. Good information is worthwhile, but know that every case is different, and bad information abounds online. I can point you to resources that are helpful. I suggest you may begin by reviewing the "Quick Guide to Select Utah Family Laws" section and the video collection on my website, at:

What are your firm's strengths and style?

I care about my clients. When you choose The Law Office of John V. Coy, you are choosing the strength of a very experienced family law attorney who will listen to you, understand your priorities, tailor services to your needs, and work to lower unnecessary conflict. This will help your case move forward purposefully, effectively, and efficiently.

It is also my strength and style to be sure my clients are well informed. I won't just tell you what I think you should do. It's your case, and your life. I will help you understand the important court procedures relevant to your case, including how your case likely will progress toward decisions.

I will also explain the evaluation or decision-making process of the commissioner and judge in reaching their decisions. This understanding will help lower your stress, and empower you to conduct yourself and work with me for the best presentation or settlement of your case.
