Firm Overview

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1982. I went into private practice in Madison immediately after graduation and have been providing divorce law services and mediation for families and businesses since that date. I was among the first practitioners of collaborative divorce when it began in Wisconsin in 2000.

In 2010, three collaborative colleagues and I established the first collaborative divorce practice group in Wisconsin to offer under-one-roof services including two collaborative attorneys and two collaborative mental health professionals providing unified collaborative divorce representation.

We are a client centered practice limited to divorce and family law. We work to support and protect the privacy, dignity, and future of our divorce clients. We support the collaborative divorce process in every appropriate case. We combine legal knowledge with common sense advice and compassion for all involved in the divorce.

Example cases

Collaborative Divorce cases require active listening, legal analysis, an ability to think outside the legal box, compassion, and strength. In a recent case, my collaborative colleague and I were able to guide a family through divorce while they continued to co-own, work in, and manage their family-owned business and raise two teen-age children. In a recent case where the divorcing spouses decided to do a traditional divorce, I was able to negotiate on behalf of my client to achieve her stated goals for the future: financial security for her children and a good co-parenting relationship with her former spouse.

In a recent mediation case, a non-traditional family was able to come to agreements about custody and placement of their children, as well as a financial settlement that met the needs of the whole family. I also provide mediation services to the United States Postal Services and those cases give me a chance to attempt to bring co-workers and management to a peaceful resolution in the workplace.

Services Offered For Fixed Fees?

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

To change the way children and families experience divorce. Divorce should be a private, future-focused planning process, not a public court battle. Lawyers should focus on client education, not litigation. Divorcing spouses should not look to an outside decision maker for a cookie-cutter solution. Instead, they should retain their rightful places as family decisions makers. Divorcing spouses have an obligation to create healthy co-parenting relationships. Divorce does not end families, it transforms them. Mom, Dad, and children are a family, period, the end. A divorced family can remain a functional family but it takes selflessness, dedication, and continuous biting-of-the-tongue!

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

A well informed client is a pleasure to work with. As a consumer, I know I would educate myself about the law and about individual lawyers before making a hiring decision.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will review documents prepared by clients under appropriate circumstances and in the manner allowed by Wisconsin law. I offer what are usually referred to as "unbundled" legal services in divorce cases if such services will serve clients' needs. In such cases, I use a written, limited services agreement. In fact, I use written employment agreements with all my clients.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I coach clients who want to represent themselves under a limited services contract, if an agreement is appropriate and will support the client's needs.

Diane L. Mader

I have worked, like most of my clients, all my life. I started as a young teenager and never looked back.

I have worked hard since I was a teenager. I understand how difficult life can be and have respect for my clients and the obstacles they face. I believe well parented children are the most important gift we give the world and our divorce system must make children's needs the North Star of divorce settlement and post-divorce co-parenting plans.

My style is peace-making, practical, and compassionate. I ask my clients to look at divorce as a future-focused planning process. I educate my clients about the differences between the legal divorce and the emotional/psychological divorce and encourage them to get help for the emotional aspects of the divorce from a trained mental health provider. My strengths are my negotiation skills, my ability to look at issues from many different perspectives, and my relationships with other professionals in team based work.

Personal interests:

Reading, writing, and spending time with friends, family, and pets fill my hours outside of work. I love the land, especially the sand counties of Wisconsin and the gulf coast of Florida.
