What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others

Derrick B. Hager became a consumer bankruptcy attorney after realizing the benefits of bankruptcy discharge relief himself many years ago. Even though I have only been practicing for 8 years, with few exceptions, I have never done anything other than consumer protection and consumer bankruptcy. My firm is expert in using "lien stripping" to eliminate second mortgage or home equity line of credit debt through Chapter 13 save-the-home bankruptcy filings. My firm has the first lien-strip release under the lien-stipping provisions in the Northern District of Illinois and the first completed/successful "Reverse 20" lien strip as well.

Derrick B. Hager

A classic "late-bloomer" employed in retail restaurant and sales for 25 years, I never decided to go to college until my retail furniture business failed and forced me into Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. The relief I experienced was nothing short of inspirational! I was 40 years old with no "formal" education and no debt but also with no credit I looked into how I could find a way to help other people the way I had been helped by bankruptcy. Rolled up my sleeves, got my feet wet at a local community college, transferred to a 4-year undergrad program called Parapegal Studies for the Legal Assistant, then on to law school.

As a paralegal for the University General Counsel, I was assigned to assist with the bankruptcy files. Then as the General Counsel's law clerk, assisted the university attorneys in drafting and presenting arguments in a large non-dischargeability adversarial procceding over embezzeled funds.
