Firm Overview

I established my firm in August 2007. It started at a makeshift desk in my garage, where all I had was my cell phone, an old laptop computer, and a basic laser printer. The firm has grown under my guidance to now have two attorneys in partnership, and one staff member, in a 2,300 square-foot office in Keizer. In April 2009 we added a second office location in Independence, to better serve our growing Polk County client base. We will soon be adding one or more associate attorneys, and expanding our practice to include bankruptcy and immigration.

My firm devotes most of its resources to family law cases of nearly all types. We daily handle divorces, custody between unmarried parents, establishment of paternity, step-parent adoptions, and modification of existing court orders. The rest of our practice is divided between juvenile law (both delinquency and dependency ("DHS" and "Child Welfare"), and criminal defense.

Example cases

A young father came to me for help, as his estranged wife had filed for divorce and cut off his access to the children. My client's wife accused him of unspeakable acts of abuse against her, and withheld the children from him for several months. We were able to use the court's processes, including a custody evaluator, to get this young father back together with his children.

An older gentleman nearing retirement needed help getting his spousal support payments to his ex-wife reduced. He was nearing retirement, and his employer was cutting back his hours. Meanwhile, his ex-wife enjoyed more hours at her work, was making more money than the court anticipated when they divorced eight years before, and her outlook for the future looked much brighter than his. We succeeded in persuading the ex-wife to agree to terminate spousal support two years early for less than fifty cents on the dollar.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

Family law relates to the things people need every day: contact with their children, financial stability, friends and family. It is part of everyday life, and probably one of the most complex and commonly needed areas of law that exists.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I fully support clients learning about their rights, duties, and options, and how the courts and the laws apply to their situations. Law is a complicated subject, though, and most folks can benefit from talking with an attorney or getting an attorney's assistance. After all, while some people can do a fine job fixing their own cars, most people would be better off with a mechanic's help. Law is no different, and we attorneys are here to help.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I regularly review documents prepared by clients, and offer constructive feedback wherever possible.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I often help people who want to represent themselves. This usually involves some time spent teaching them about the law and what to expect from the court processes they will encounter. Part of this help is also being frank with folks who would truly benefit from representation by an attorney.

Christopher Eggert

1996 - 2000: Associate Attorney at several law firms in Portland, Oregon and Salem, Oregon.
2000 - 2002: Solo Practitioner in Salem, Oregon.
2002 - 2004: Deputy District Attorney at Polk County District Attorney's Office, Dallas, Oregon.
2004 - 2007: Associate Attorney at Goldberg & Jones, PLLC, Portland, Oregon.

Everything I have done in life makes me a better lawyer. Being married with children provides me with especially practical insight into family law. Going to church regularly helps me to keep in mind my place in this world and to maintain my spirit. Every fault I find and every mistake I make helps me to do better next time. In short, "being human" is the best way to be a better lawyer!

My strengths are my ability to inform and educate my clients, other attorneys, and the courts, and my ability to stay focused on the long-term game plan. My style is generally "slow and steady wins the race," but I can snap to a sprint when my clients have a need for speed.

Personal interests:

I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, worship, singing in my church choir, and following current events.
