Nik attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, graduating with honors in 2016 with a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in History. After graduating from college, Nik spent a year bartending in Salt Lake City before moving to New York City and attending Brooklyn Law School. During this time, he worked for two years for a small Midtown firm that specialized in commercial real estate as well as trusts and estates. Nik also spent a year and a half in a clinical externship at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. While there, he worked under the Deputy Chief for the Civil Division on such cases as the DACA and Haiti Temporary Protected Status litigations and the Purdue Pharmaceutical Multidistrict Litigation. Some of the cases Nik worked on made it before the Second Circuit where he was granted the opportunity to sit in on multiple oral arguments. Nik graduated with honors from Brooklyn Law School in 2020 and passed the Colorado Bar Exam that July.

Shortly before taking the Bar Exam, Nik married the love of his life, whom he met while attending Gonzaga University, in a ceremony just outside of Glacier National Park in Montana. They are devoted soccer players and fans, both continuing to play regularly, often on the same team. Mr. Berlant has been licensed to practice law and has been in good standing for over twenty five years. He has been granted the honor of also being licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Berlant received his doctorate from the University of Denver in 1988 and passed the Colorado Bar Exam the same year. Mr. Berlant also has a business and science background and enjoys working closely with engineers of all disciplines, economists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, neurologists and a plethora of medical professionals.

Mr. Berlant has sole responsibility for his cases, which are predominantly Tort based (civil relief for persons who have suffered harm due to the wrongful acts of others). He has also had extensive experience with CERCLA litigation (hazardous substance clean-up) including actions involving railroads and mining operations, nuisance and trespassing, hazardous waste removal and remediation and implementation of the Clean Air Act, Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act, et al.

In addition, Mr. Berlant has been involved with class-action lawsuits. Mr. Berlant has also been engaged in business and transactional law, including serving as in-house counsel for a satellite television network and he was lead defense counsel in a complex groundwater remediation lawsuit involving an innocent landowner. Additionally, Mr. Berlant was involved in the toxic tort case involving Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Facility (a case in which the local residents were exposed to airborne radiological contaminants that had been released into the soil). He successfully prevented the creation of a placer mine in a small Colorado community and built a coalition to challenge a proposed EPA waste disposal permit for a weld county landfill. Furthermore, Mr. Berlant was part of a team that litigated and set a clean-up precedent for a CERCLA mining waste site in Colorado.

After graduating from college, Nik spent a year bartending in Salt Lake City before moving to New York City and attending Brooklyn Law School. During this time, he worked for two years for a small Midtown firm that specialized in commercial real estate as well as trusts and estates. Nik also spent a year and a half in a clinical externship at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. While there, he worked under the Deputy Chief for the Civil Division on such cases as the DACA and Haiti Temporary Protected Status litigations and the Purdue Pharmaceutical Multidistrict Litigation. He successfully prevented the creation of a placer mine in a small Colorado community and built a coalition to challenge a proposed EPA waste disposal permit for a weld county landfill. Furthermore, Mr. Berlant was part of a team that litigated and set a clean-up precedent for a CERCLA mining waste site in Colorado.
