Firm Overview

My firm's focus is on estate planning, real estate transactions (commercial and residential), representation of small businesses, and landlord representation in landlord/tenant matters.

I started practice as a solo practitioner in the early 1980s. Since then my firm has grown to its current structure. In January of 2008, my long time associates Michael Riffkin and Rena Strauss and I joined forces to create Grant, Riffkin & Strauss, P.C.

Example cases

Throughout my career I have helped numerous clients establish a strong estate plan to accomplish their needs, wishes, hopes, and desires. Additionally, I work with my clients to manage all aspects of their business and real estate related matters.

We practice law in the following jurisdiction: Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Estate Planning
A small amount of work in the area of Estate Planning can help your loved ones and heirs avoid long delays, legal problems, uncertainty, and a potentially large tax burden.
A timely and effective estate plan will provide you with benefits other than tax savings. For example, you, rather than the Court, can designate guardians for your minor children. Also, having an estate plan can prevent your family from having to make difficult medical decisions regarding your care.

Your Planning Team

Many people can be "Estate planners" but the best planner, by far, is you. With the assistance of our office, you can become acquainted with the planning process and the benefits. With the assistance of trained professionals, you can learn how to manage your assets and achieve the results you want with your estate. Some professional advisors who can provide assistance include the following:
•Your accountant
•Your attorney
•Your insurance agent
•Your trust officer

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I enjoy helping people create and ensure their legacy. This, in conjunction with my financial background naturally lends itself to counseling my clients with their estate planning needs, counseling on issues surrounding their businesses, and assisting with the purchase and sale of real estate. As an attorney in a small firm I have the unique opportunity to build long-term client relationships.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It is important to stay informed and active in pursuing your intended goal. Although it is helpful if my clients have educated themselves regarding their specific legal issue, I pride myself in being able to explain their situations and options, spending enough time while doing so to ensure that they are fully informed and I have met their needs.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Although I am willing to review documents prepared by clients, it has been my experience that it is more cost effective for me to create the documents.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

If my representation or firm's representation of a client is not cost effective, the best course of action is for the client to represent themselves. If this is the case, I will fully support my client and help them obtain their desired outcome.

Alan Grant

I have been actively employed as an attorney since graduating from law school.

As both an attorney and a CPA, I am uniquely qualified to provide advice regarding estate planning. I am also able to offer my guidance to my clients about how to structure and run their business to be as successful as possible.

I like to lead by example. My theory is that I am not willing to ask someone to do something that I am not willing to do myself. I therefore keep a close eye on all associate and legal assistant work and I am fully aware of all matters taking place in my office.
