Our Firm handles a wide ranging spectrum of Criminal Defense cases, and chances are if you have been charged with a crime, we can help you too.
CRIMINAL DEFENSE / TRAFFIC
Our defense attorneys have extensive trial experience, handling cases from start to finish.

Below is a breakdown of some of the types of cases we can help with:

VIOLENT CRIME

Being charged with a violent crime can have serious consequences. Becoming a convicted felon, serving a long prison sentence, or being placed on probation are just a few. The criminal defense attorneys at 7 Cities Law have experience handling the crimes listed above.

As former Virginia Beach prosecutors, Kristin Paulding and Scott Lang have handled violent crime cases from start to finish. Today they work as a team to defend men and women who find themselves charged with these offenses. In addition to their experience, both in and out of the courtroom, they utilize a criminal defense investigator to help prepare their cases.

The criminal defense attorneys at 7 Cities Law also have extensive trial experience. They are prepared to handle each segment of your case, from the initial bond hearing, preliminary hearing, trial, sentencing, and appeal, if necessary. Our defense attorneys have experience handling hundreds of trials, and they are not afraid to step into the courtroom to defend you.

If you are a minor and are charged in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, our attorneys can also help you. With violent crimes, the prosecutor may move to have you tried as an adult. We will work with you to review your case and try to obtain the best outcome for you or your child.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

One of the most serious consequences of a sexual assault conviction is placement on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry. Several of the sex crimes listed above require placement on that registry if convicted. Being a sex offender limits your ability to live in certain places and work in others. Before you go to trial or plead guilty to a sex offense, you should hire an experienced criminal defense attorney.

At 7 Cities Law, our criminal defense attorneys have experience handling the above charges. The sexual acts in these cases often occur between two people, the alleged victim and the person charged. At our firm, we strive to continue investigating these claims, even after an arrest is made, to determine whether or not they are truthful. We work with a criminal investigator to do just that.

DRUG + ALCOHOL CHARGES

Every year, thousands of people in the state of Virginia are arrested and convicted of DUI. A DUI conviction can have several consequences, including a fine, jail sentence, probation, alcohol treatment, ignition interlock, and license suspension. It is important to have an experienced DUI attorney to explain the process, go over the possible consequences of a conviction, and defend you in court.

DUI cases are some of the most complex cases to handle in Virginia. The law is very specific, and the police and prosecutors must meet several requirements before you can be found guilty.

PROPERTY + THEFT CRIME

A conviction for a property or theft crime can have consequences that reach far beyond the courtroom. Have you ever worked in a place where you had to handle money or handle someone's personal information? Oftentimes, prospective employers will look at your criminal record before hiring you. How do you think a prospective employer will feel if she sees that you have been convicted of stealing or breaking into someone's house? If you have been arrested for a property or theft crime, you should talk to an experienced criminal defense attorney before you go to court.

WEAPONS OFFENSES

The Commonwealth of Virginia has very specific laws when it comes to carrying or possessing certain weapons. If you have been convicted of a felony or have been adjudicated delinquent as a juvenile of a felony offense, you cannot carry or possess certain weapons. To do so could mean a mandatory prison sentence of two to five years.

FAMILY + DOMESTIC CRIMES

No one ever wants to be arrested. However, being arrested for a crime that involves your child or loved one can be especially difficult. Crimes against children and family members are taken very seriously in the Virginia Courts. If convicted of one of these family or domestic crimes, the court may order you to serve a jail or prison sentence, pay a fine, or have no contact with your family member or loved one. The criminal defense attorneys at 7 Cities Law have experience handling the above listed cases.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

In my 20 years of service as an officer in the United States Navy, I learned what it means to serve our country. In that spirit, I continue to fight today alongside veterans, active duty service members, retirees, reservists, and the civilian members of our community to uphold the tenets of freedom and justice.

SCOTT LANG
Virginia Beach Criminal Defense Attorney and Military Defense Attorney

I have a strong appreciation and deep gratitude for the sacrifices of our active duty and veterans, and our firm is committed to providing service-members the highest quality service. In recognition of this, we offer discounts to active duty military and veterans. As an experienced practicing criminal defense attorney in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and throughout all of Hampton Roads, I am dedicated to providing a zealous defense and fighting for your rights.

Commissioned in 1985, I began my naval career as a surface warfare officer on the U.S.S. Dahlgren (DDG-43). I was recognized by my superior officers and selected for the Navy's highly competitive legal program. After graduating magna cum laude from Villanova University School of Law, I proudly continued to serve my country through my work in the Navy's Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. During my 15 years as a military attorney, I served as both a criminal defense attorney and prosecutor, and advised senior officers including the Commander, Naval Air Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet.

After retiring at the rank of Commander, I remained committed to the Hampton Roads community, working as a prosecutor for 10 years in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth Attorney's Office. As a Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney, I oversaw the trials of felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases. Further, I personally acted as the lead attorney on cases involving homicide (murder or manslaughter), arson, robbery, burglary, larceny, fraud, traffic violations, and DUIs. I have also handled a number of federal cases involving drug, firearm, fraud, and environmental crimes for the U.S. Attorney's Office. During my time as a military, state, and federal prosecutor, I learned firsthand the inner workings of the criminal justice system, developing an extensive knowledge of police procedures and investigations in Virginia and throughout the country.
