Sally Cooperrider (formerly Sally Nixon) has been practicing law in San Jose for over 20 years. She is trained and experienced as a Collaborative Law attorney, and has helped many couples resolve the issues in their divorce, domestic partner breakup, or other family law matter.
Collaborative Law is a new approach to help couples and families go through the difficult process of re-making their family structures and settling their finances without the financial and emotional drain of a contested divorce case.
In a Collaborative Law case, the parties work with their attorneys (and optionally other professionals) to come to a mutually satisfactory agreement, without asking a judge to make decisions about their case. They agree to disclose all their financial information, and to try to look at the needs of the family as a whole, as well as looking out for their own needs.
In Collaborative Law each party has their own attorney to advocate for them and to advise them. If you choose Collaborative Law, the four of you (two parties and two attorneys) will work as a team to gather information and to come to an agreement about your case. You can also involve other professionals, such as an accountant, appraiser, a communications coach and/or a child specialist , if you choose to do so. As a team you will gather documents and information to help you come to an agreement about your property, child and/or spousal support, if appropriate, and custody and visitation matters. After you come to an agreement, one or both attorneys will put it in written form, and will prepare the necessary court papers.
If any party in a Collaborative Law case feels that the process is not working, he or she still retains the option to use the court system, but cannot use the Collaborative Law attorney to do so.
The Collaborative Law attorneys are trained to keep the process positive and forward looking. The parties can learn new skills for communicating with each other after the divorce process, as well as working through the re-structuring of their family without the emotional wear and tear of going to court.

Estate Planning
Sally Cooperrider prepares wills, trusts, and Powers of Attorney. She has been practicing estate planning for over 20 years.
Sally Cooperrider can meet with you to decide what kind of estate plan is best for your needs. She can then prepare a trust and/or will, if needed. She also prepares powers of attorney and can help you fill out an Advanced Health Care Directive.
To prepare for an appointment with Sally Cooperrider you will need to think about who will receive your assets after your death (and after the death of your spouse or partner if you have one), and who will distribute your assets (your trustee or executor). She will also ask about alternate beneficiaries and trustee/executors.
