Criminal Defense

Katharine L. Elliott has been in private practice since 2002.
Prior to that she was a public defender for 14 years.

I handle all levels of criminal charges including DUI, battery, spousal abuse, marijuana or other drug charges, rape, murder and molest.

I also handle juveniles accused of crimes.

I defend civil forfeiture cases and handle "white-collar" defense as well.

I represent persons that need to clean up their past records, including those facing ICE proceedings. This includes filing expungement motions and requests for a certificate of rehabilitation.

I handle writs and appeals including motions to withdraw a plea.

How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?

I have always worked in criminal law and enjoy helping those that have problems with the law. Being accused of a crime is a very stressful event and involves many different factors.

My job in helping the client does not end with the termination of the court case because I value seeing them succeed in turning their lives around.

What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others

I have tried close to 100 jury trials. I have practiced in several different counties. My experience as a public defender for over 14 years means that I have handled every type of criminal case.

I have a great deal of experience working with individuals suffering with mental illness and have been very successful in helping them.

I taught trial skills to those seeking to become defense attorneys for many years through California Public Defenders Trial Skills workshop.

My mission is to learn and understand my clients' needs and the external factors effecting them so that I can aggressively and professionally represent them throughout the legal process. I will clearly communicate the options available, thereby enabling my clients to make well-informed decisions for themselves.

My approach is to provide a personalized attorney-client relationship based on each client's unique concerns and requirements. My philosophy is based on the commitment to provide experienced advice to my clients. My clients can expect prompt personal service and uncompromising, quality legal representation delivered in a cost-effective manner.

I am constantly seeking to improve my performance in order to be prepared for the challenges facing my clients. I keep pace with the latest innovations in the delivery of legal services by continually investing in training and technology. I was a Public Defender for a substantial period of time, which exposed me to a wide variety of cases and is the basis for my substantial trial experience. My work ethic is based on diligent work, community involvement and a commitment to the client.
