Firm Focus

I represent individuals charged with a crime or injured by the negligence of another. On the criminal side, I specialize in DUIs, all criminal charges including Misdemeanors, Felonies, and Federal Charges. On the civil side, I specialize in personal injury cases including motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, premises liability, and any other kind of injuries caused by the negligence of another.

Firm History

I have learned from some of the best criminal defense and personal injury trial lawyers in the country. After working on thousands of cases for these lawyers, and splitting my time between these cases, I decided that I wanted to be able to provide my clients the personal attention and service their cases require. That's why I opened Zaner Law. Each case is different and each requires a different approach. At Zaner Law, your story will be told.

Activities and Awards

I clerked for a Federal District Judge for one year after graduating law school. I helped the Judge write his opinions and I learned what works from behind the bench — what wins cases and what loses them. Very few criminal defense and personal injury attorneys in Denver have clerked for a Federal Judge. SCHOLASTICALLY— Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude (University of Florida Law School), Order of the Coif, American Legal Institute and American Bar Association's Best Graduate Award. PROFESSIONALLY — I have co-authored two published articles - "Driving While on the Cell Phone; Punitive Damage Awards Should Come Through Loud and Clear" ABA's The Brief, Tort Trial & Ins. Prac. Sec., and "National Security Policy and Ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty" 32 Houston Journal of International Law 1. PHILANTHROPY — For the past five years I have volunteered with several different organizations (United Way/Denver Rescue Mission/ Whiz Kids) tutoring homeless and underprivileged children.

Example Cases

DUI - I represented a young man charged with DUI who was arrested after the police found him sleeping in his car, behind the wheel, in the middle of the road, at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. At trial I convinced 5 out of 6 jurors that he was not drinking and driving. After the mis-trial, the District Attorney dropped the DUI charges.

CRIMINAL DEFENSE - I represented a young man at trial accused of assaulting and striking his girlfriend and convinced the jury that he was innocent.

PERSONAL INJURY - I helped represent the family of a young man who was crushed to death when the gates to his apartment complex crushed him to death when he was walking through the gates at 2 in the morning. I helped his family recover a substantial settlement.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more you know the better. I am here to help.

Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Absolutely.

Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I will provide each client a free consultation and if I believe it would be best for the client to represent themself, then I will give candid advice on how to do that.

Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

Unfortunately not. When you hire my law firm, you receive a very personalized approach. To try the case the right way and obtain the best result, I need to handle the entire case and employ a case-wide strategy from start to finish.

What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

I will handle every aspect of the case.

How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?

I will use mediation in personal injury cases when it makes sense.

Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?

Yes. I have helped several non-profits in need here in the Front Range.

What distinguishes your law firm from others?

I provide a very personalized approach. At Zaner Law, I understand that every case is different and requires a unique approach. No other attorney will touch your case except for me, start to finish. I work aggressively and intelligently to ensure that you will receive the best possible representation. I am also one of the few criminal defense and personal injury attorneys in Denver who has clerked for a Federal Judge – a very prestigious position where I assisted the Judge in making decisions from behind the bench.

If I do not recovery anything, I do not charge you anything.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
