Firm History
Techlaw was started in 2008 when three law firms merged. The partners had experience at large law firms, and had also been independent practitioners. The firm was established to create the best of both worlds: great individual service, with the strength of many attorneys.
Activities and Awards
Partners of Techlaw have been adjunct professors of law; directors for non-profit and for-profit corporations; CEO’s; principals of venture capital and angel investment organizations. We teach seminars, moderate panels, and offer expertise to a variety of associations and organizations.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
We do our best to put ourselves in the client’s shoes. Dana Robinson, for example, has owned four businesses and is an investor in many others. He believes that clients are best served by learning as much as possible about what he does so that they can use their lawyers more effectively and efficiently.
Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?
In some instances, but we find that many documents that are “standard” are cheaper for us to provide from scratch than to review and revise what was created by the client.
Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Not typically. A client who desires to negotiate their own agreement, for example, can use us for the “behind the scenes” work without having us take the forefront of their negotiation. However, we do not work with pro per litigants.
Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
Yes.
What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?
As a boutique, most of our work is handled directly by the responsible partner. We believe that this is more cost effective than leveraging several associates per partner, and provides the client with a better service. Where significant research is required, we employ law clerks from the local law schools, which we bill at a significant discount to typical associate fees.
How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?
Most cases are settled well prior to trial, but often not through the mechanisms of mediation or arbitration.
Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?
Yes.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees
Techlaw offers a menu of fixed fee services. A rate sheet is available upon request. Techlaw will offer a free initial client consultation ($200 value) to those clients who mention Nolo. We are offering a trademark filing special for Nolo members of $695, typically $995, inclusive of the filing fee, for the initial filing of a trademark in one class.

Free Initial Consultation?
Our typical new client consultation is $200, which is waived if the client hires us. However, we offer a free 30 minute consultation to Nolo customers.
Typical Retainer
We require any fixed fee services to be paid in advance. Other retainers range from $1000 for small projects, to $10,000 for larger projects and more for litigation.
Nolo's Licensing Check
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the state agency that licenses lawyers upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any state licensing agency.
