Firm Focus
Our firm is focused on helping consumers who are being harassed by debt collectors or who have been cheated by business.
Firm History
Consumer Law Advocacy Services was formed in response to the growing number of complaints by consumers of unscrupulous debt collectors and unfair or deceptive business practices. During the recent severe economic downturn, many people lost their jobs and were left struggling to pay their bills through no fault of their own. My firm is focused on making sure that all people are treated fairly and with dignity and respect by debt collectors, big business, and insurance companies.
Example Cases
A client called me upset by a debt collection attempt on an account over ten years old that he knew he had paid. The debt collector had called his home, his wife's cell phone, and my client's place of business. After gathering all the information and presenting it to the debt collector, the case was settled out of court within eight weeks. My client did not have to pay me a dime. His credit rating was improved, and he got a check for $1,000.00 in damages.
Another client came to my office for help with an account which admittedly had not been paid, and confided in my me that he knew he owed the money and wanted to pay it back. Unfortunately, the debt collector hired to recover the money had called my client at work and made misleading statements and false threats. In addition, the debt collectors were very rude and often shouted at my client. He was understandably upset. When I confronted the debt collector with their violation of State and Federal law, they settled right away. Again, the client paid nothing and will soon receive a check for $1,000.00.
What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
The original philosophy of my law firm was based around providing affordable access to legal information. I provide links on my website to all the free sources of legal information in my area that we use at my firm to supplement professional paid legal research sites. Clients should always be well informed on the law, and it should not have to cost you an arm and a leg.
Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I am often available to review documents prepared by current or potential clients.
Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I am willing to provide limited representation for clients who prefer to represent themselves and I have even turned down clients and recommended they represent themselves in small claims court. However, if you are being sued, or are in a court other than "small claims" or its equivalent, I would suggest that representing yourself might cost you more than you''ll save by not hiring an attorney.
Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
