Every case is unique and the time involved in obtaining benefits varies per case. It is very common for it to take two or more years for a claimant to obtain benefits. I try to do what I can to expedite that process if possible. Here are two examples of different cases I have handled: 1) My client came in to see me after receiving his first denial. I filed a request for a hearing with an ALJ in May. My client and I then worked together to obtain a letter from his treating physician. I used that letter to assist us in obtaining an "on the record" decision in October, which meant that my client received his benefits in a matter of months as opposed to waiting over a year for his hearing. 2) In Claimant v. Commissioner SSA, a 2011 case, I appealed an ALJ denial to the Federal District Court. I was successful in obtaining an order sending the case back for payment back to claimant's initial filing date in 2006 which resulted in over 5 years of benefits for my client.

I have years of experience practicing Social Security law and have obtained benefits for hundreds of clients. Since I devote 100% of my practice to Social Security law, I handle even the most difficult cases. I am experienced with both mental and physical disability cases. Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?

I handle Social Security cases at various levels of the appeals process and would be happy to consult with someone about the possibility of taking only one part of his or her claim.

What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?

As a licensed attorney, I personally handle all aspects of my client's cases from the initial appointment through representation at the hearing and beyond if necessary. Social Security cases are contingency based so an hourly rate is not applicable.

This is not applicable to my practice.

What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I think it is important for people to educate themselves on legal issues. However, because the law is so complex, I am happy to teach and guide people through this process. Since there is so much misinformation about Social Security law, I recommend that people speak with me before making decisions that could adversely affect their benefits.

Is your firm willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Absolutely. It is important that I review all documents prepared by my clients before they are submitted to the Social Security Administration.

Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I would not encourage an individual to represent himself or herself before the Social Security Administration because there is so much at stake. Anyone can afford a Social Security attorney because we take cases on a contingency basis which means there is no fee unless we win.
