Is your firm willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
Yes.
What are your policies about dividing work within the firm to make the process most cost-effective for the client?
Most of our clients want Mr. Koplen to represent them throughout all phases of their case, but the volume of work precludes this. Mr. Koplen will assign work to associates and paralegals in his best judgment but will supervise all aspects of every client's case.
How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?
In appropriate cases, where we believe there is a reasonable chance of a favorable outcome for our client, we will suggest mediation. We do not typically favor arbitration as arbitrator's decisions are rarely appealable.
Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?
We provide pro bono services on a regular basis to needy clients.
What distinguishes your law firm from others?
We have the largest bankruptcy practice in Rockland County, New York and one of the largest practices in the State of New York. Most of our clients reach us by word of mouth recommendation from other clients and attorneys. There is a good reason for that. We are diligent, and we get the job done.
What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
We will do our best to educate our clients on the legal nuances of their cases. However, our primary focus is on protecting our clients' interests.
Is your firm willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
No. As Abraham Lincoln once famously said, "A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client". If this is true of lawyers, it is all the more so true of laymen.
Michael Koplen
Senior Attorney Michael A. Koplen was admitted to the New York Bar in 1982. After working in large Manhattan law firms for more than ten years, Mr. Koplenl opened his own practice, first in Manhattan, and then in Rockland County, New York, where he has established one of the leading firms in the lower Hudson Valley of New York.
