Firm Focus
I might be able to help you if you think a business has treated you unfairly. There are many ways a business could cheat you. For example, a car dealer sold you a used truck or used car with the odometer rolled back. Perhaps a dealer sold you a new or used vehicle that had some hidden defects or problems he did not tell you about. Maybe the vehicle was in a wreck or has a bad title. Sometimes this is fraud. A debt collector might be calling your employer about a debt it thinks you owe, or file a lawsuit against you trying to take (garnish) your wages. A business might take advantage of your age or some disability and overcharge you. And sometimes you buy something and—when you get it home—it just does not work. This might be a breach of warranty.
Firm History
I started practicing consumer law in Alaska in 1983, and opened my New Mexico law practice in 2009.
Activities and Awards
I received the Robert Hickerson Distinguished Individual Service Pro Bono Award in 2003 from the Alaska Bar Association for my “leadership, outstanding volunteer services and demonstrated commitment to making equal access to justice a reality for low-income Alaskans.” I also received an award from St. John’s College, Santa Fe, for the best Sanskrit translation in 2006.
Example Cases
I recently obtained a settlement for two clients who had bought a truck that has been sold to them with a clean title even though the title was actually salvage. In another recent case I obtained a settlement for clients who had bought a truck that had been falsely advertised.
What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
Knowledge is power. The more clients know about their case, the better the outcome is likely to be.
Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Yes
Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Yes
Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
Yes
What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?
If necessary I contract with an investigator, paralegal, etc. I perform all the legal work myself.
How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?
Whenever appropriate or necessary. I have had success with mediation; arbitration has been less than satisfactory.
Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?
Yes. I won an award in Alaska for lifetime pro bono achievement.
What distinguishes your law firm from others?
Compassion, as evidenced by my having been recognized for my pro bono work. Intellect, as demonstrated by my degree from Harvard Law School, two Masters' degrees from St. John's in Santa Fe, and Bachelor's Degree from Michigan (Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude). Lack of avarice.
