What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
I encourage my clients to educate themselves and make it a priority to provide information. It is my philosophy that the client owns his or her case and should have enough information as to make an education and informed decision.
Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
If a client wishes me to review documents, I do so willingly. I routinely review documents prepared by clients and by opposing parties.
Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
I routinely work with clients on an hourly basis to assist them with all their legal needs. I am willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves.
Why did you decide to be a lawyer?
I am a second career attorney. This means that I had a career and owned my own business before I went to law school. Like all business owners, running a business means interaction with attorneys. These interactions taught me that the legal system is not necessarily friendly or efficient to those who need to use the system. I felt then, and feel now that I have the ability to help individuals and businesses navigate a procedurally complex, sometimes inefficient and expensive system.
What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?
Before I became a lawyer I was involved in a number of transactions which required legal assistance. Regardless of the skill of my attorney, I spent numerous billable hours trying to explain things to my attorney that he had never dealt with before. My experience as a business owner, property owner, husband, father gives me advantages over other family law attorneys. I can analyze a balance sheet, a tax return and argue the differences between gross and net income.
Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?
I enjoy working with people, solving problems and making a real difference helping people through difficult times in their lives.
What do you like best about your career?
I have helped people get through one of the most traumatic events in their lives, and often see devastated individuals resolve their issues and move forward with confidence. I also take pride in the fact that I have been instrumental in helping a number of children end up in a better situation thus allowing them to have a better life.
Tell us about your law firm:
Herrig & Vogt, LLP has great lawyers and a fantastically talented support staff. With the diversity of lawyers there is always someone available to bounce ideas off of or to test and challenge legal theories. Having a strong support staff means that some of your work can be done less expensively by competent and experienced paralegals.
What are your strengths and style?
As a second career attorney, I understand that the legal system presents a challenging maze of confusing jargon and procedure. I bring the ability to simplify these abstract concepts so that you can understand what is going on, without giving up some of the technical nuances that can be used to advance your interests.
Personal Interests:
Now that my children are grown, I enjoy reading, socializing and riding my motorcycles. In 2009, I rode solo to the Arctic Ocean at Deadhorse, Alaska. In 2006 I drove to Cabo San Lucas and back.
