What is your firm's point of view regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?
The initial consultation with a prospective client is very important to us because it gives us a chance to explore all legal issues affecting our prospective client and offer guidance and counsel as to the prospective client’s options. The prospective client is never under any obligation to hire us when they come in for a consultation. Regardless of whether the prospective client hires our firm, we strive to ensure that they at least walk away educated about the legal issues affecting them and their options.
Are your attorneys willing to review documents prepared by clients?
Yes, on a case by case basis.
Are your attorneys willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?
Yes, on a case by case basis.
Are your attorneys willing to help a client with one discrete part of a case, without taking on the whole case?
Yes, on a case by case basis.
What are your policies about dividing work among the firm's partners, associates, and paralegals to make the process most cost-effective for the client?
In cases involving family law, our policy is to charge a flat fee rather than charge by the hour. This is a very cost effective method of charging for the client because the client knows from the very beginning what the fee will be regardless of whether the situation escalates. In personal injury cases, our policy is to charge a reasonable percentage of any recovery. All work involved, whether for family or personal injury cases is done primarily by either attorneys, Marc Garza or Michele Garza.
How frequently does your firm use mediation, arbitration, or collaborative law to resolve cases?
Not all personal injury cases involve a lawsuit. If a lawsuit is filed, it is an expectation that sometime before trial, mediation will be attempted in an effort to resolve the case. In family law cases, every effort is made to work with opposing counsel/party to reach an agreement instead of putting the parties through a trial.
Does your firm provide pro bono legal services or otherwise participate in your community?
Both attorneys handle pro bono cases for Rio Grande Legal Aid.
What distinguishes your law firm from others?
The Garza Law Firm takes no client or case for granted. Every case receives an attorney’s personal attention. Clients are always kept informed as their case progresses and the client is always welcome to contact the attorney to discuss any matters related to their case.
